She savored the sight of dogs turning on each other, but the best part was yet to come.
She took out her phone and dialed 911.
The police arrived quickly and pulled the two brawling men apart.
“Officer, he he tried to run me over! He was trying to kill me!” Chasel, his face bruised and swollen, pointed a shaky finger at Zebulon.
Zebulon, clutching his bleeding ear, pointed back. “He took my money and double- crossed me! The liar!”
The officers looked confused. “What exactly happened here?”
Penelope stepped forward, her face a perfect mask of fear. “Officers, they were working together to blackmail me! Then they tried to kill me with the car!”
At her words, both Zebulon and Chasel froze.

Penelope pointed at Chasel. “He has the thirty-million-dollar check he extorted from me in his pocket right now!”
An officer immediately searched Chasel and produced the check.
“She—she gave it to me willingly!” Chasel stammered.
“Willingly? You think I’m crazy enough to willingly give you thirty million dollars?” Penelope showed the officer her phone. “He fabricated rumors to defame me and threatened me until I agreed to pay. I had no other choice.”
The check was evidence. The text messages were evidence. Chasel had no way out.
“And what about him?” an officer asked, pointing at Zebulon.
Penelope met Zebulon’s eyes. He was frantically trying to signal her, begging her to spare him.

“They were in it together.”
Both men were to be taken to the station, and Penelope would go to give her statement.
Zebulon lunged at her, but an officer held him back. Still not grasping the gravity of the situation, he
demanded to call his father to sort things out
“Extortion and attempted murder. Do you have any idea what the combined sentence for those charges is?” an officer asked him sternly.

The officer almost laughed. “Alright, let me educate you. If you’re convicted, you’ll
be sentenced to a minimum of ten years in prison.”
The color drained from Zebulon’s face. He was terrified.
“It was a moment of weakness! I never meant to commit a crime!”
“But you did.”
He turned desperately to Penelope “Penelope, tell them it was all a misunderstanding! I never wanted to hurt you! For the sake of our past, please, help me!”
Penelope just stared at him, her eyes growing colder by the second.
She had given him a chance. He had thrown it away.
After giving her statement at the police station, Penelope was about to leave when Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan and Rebecca arrived.
Mr. Sullivan, having been briefed on the situation, collapsed into a chair, muttering, “It’s over, it’s all over.”
Mrs. Sullivan and Rebecca, however, hadn’t yet grasped the severity of it all. They rushed toward Penelope as she came out.
