Chapter 490
“And if I pay you, this will all be over?”
“Yes, absolutely!”
“Without getting approval from the person pulling the strings?”
“She just told me to get a million from you, not…”
Buck stopped short, realizing he’d said too much. He quickly backtracked, looking flustered. “What person pulling the strings? There’s no one behind me.”
A small smile played on Penelope’s lips. “I spoke with your doctor. He said a simple fall on a flat surface wouldn’t be enough to break a tailbone and cause an injury as severe as yours.”
“What… what are you trying to say?”
“Especially since you got up immediately after you fell that day. That’s even more proof you weren’t seriously hurt then.”
“And later that night, you attacked our Ms. James.”
“That’s nonsense…”
“Oh? Do you really think that alley doesn’t have security cameras? Even if the alley itself doesn’t, what about the entrances and exits?”
Buck was bewildered by Penelope’s relentless questioning. With his backside still aching, his thoughts grew even more jumbled.
“It doesn’t matter how I got hurt! You’re still responsible!”
“But it wasn’t Ms. James who injured you!”
“I… I…”
Buck was on the verge of breaking, but just then, Penelope’s phone rang. It was Wilma.
“Penelope, Darren and his crew are here with Buck’s wife and child. They’re blocking the entrance to our office, demanding compensation. They say they won’t leave until we pay.”
Penelope frowned. No wonder she hadn’t seen them at the hospital; they were at her company.
Hearing this, Buck’s panicked expression immediately calmed.
“I don’t know what the doctor said. All I know is that woman pushed me, and I got hurt. You have to take full responsibility. Not only do I want compensation; want a publi apology.”

Penelope hung up. Who could be orchestrating all of this-advising Buck, mobilizing Darren’s crew, and coordinating with Zebulon?
“That woman, Rebecca, has no sense of loyalty. I’d watch your back if I were you.
You don’t want to end up with nothing but a permanent injury.”
At the mention of ‘Rebecca’, Buck’s eyes flickered.
“Of course, I know she’s the one who put you up to this.”
Buck pressed his lips together, not immediately refuting her claim. Penelope knew she was right.
Rebecca had joined the Bishop Group right before Penelope left Orenthalt made perfect sense that she would be in charge of their project and use her position to set them up.
“I’m not giving you any money. Not a single cent,” Penelope said coldly.
“Ms. Winters said that if I just stuck to the story, you’d definitely pay up!” Buck blurted out, a note of panic in his voice.
“But the truth is, Ms. James didn’t cause your injury, did she?”
“But Ms. Winters said…”
“Is her word gospel? You’re seriously injured now. You won’t be able to work on a construction site again, and you might even face lifelong complications that affect your daily lifer We are not going to give you any money. Did Rebecca promise to compensate you for that?”
“No… no, she didn’t.”
“So, she screwed you over.”
With that, Penelope turned and walked out.
Just as she expected, the moment she was out the door, Buck immediately called
Rebecca, his voice raised in angry accusation.
As Penelope got into her car, her own phone rang. It was Rebecca.
She wanted to operate from the shadows, launching sneak attacks, but Penelope
was determined to drag her into the light.
“Let’s meet.”
