Chapter 483
Penelope could see from their demeanor that they had no intention of leaving without money.
But if she paid them now, it would be an admission of guilt, and they would likely never stop coming back for more.
“Leaving aside whether your man was injured because of our actions, you claim he has a broken bone. You must have a medical report. It’s not unreasonable for me to want to see it, is it?”
“You don’t believe us?”
The leader, a man named Darren, was built like a bear with fierce, intimidating eyes. He didn’t seem like someone you could reason with, but Penelope decided to try a calm approach first.
“Based on your word alone? No, I don’t believe you.”
Darren shot her a glare, then pulled out his phone and made a video call. After a moment, someone answered, and he instructed them to point the camera at Buck.
The phone screen filled with the sound of agonizing screams. A man was lying on the floor of a hospital corridor, drenched in a cold sweat and shaking from pain. Penelope’s brow furrowed. “Why isn’t he getting treatment?”
“He has no money. His wife has no money. We have no money!” Darren declared. “They can provide treatment first and bill you later.”
“And who’s going to pay that bill?”
“You are!”
Penelope looked back at the man on the screen. If he continued like this, he was going to pass out from the pain. It was clear they were determined to blame her company, and for the moment, there was no way out.
“Tell the doctors to give him something for the pain. I’ll cover the cost,” Penelope said.
“Fine. You’re coming with us to that hospital.”
“I said to get him medication first. At least stop the pain!”
“Payment has to be made first!”
Penelope had no choice. She hurried with them to the other hospital. When they arrived, the man named Buck was still on the floor in the corridor, while a woman holding a small child wept helplessly beside him.
Passersby stared, and a doctor had tried several times to persuade him to accept treatment, but he refused.
“I don’t have any money, not a single cent! Aaargh! I’m not moving until someone comes to pay my medical bills!”
The man had an incredible tolerance for pain. Seeing this, Penelope knew she couldn’t argue, She went and paid a portion of the fees, and only then did he allow the doctors to treat him.
As the man’s screams finally subsided, Penelope’s head began to clear.
She planned to return to Hannah to get a clearer picture of what had happened, but as she turned to leave, Darren blocked her path.
“He’s still in surgery. Don’t even think about running off!”
Penelope narrowed her eyes. “I’ve already paid for him. What more do you want?”
ul
“What you paid won’t even cover the medical fees, let alone the lost wages, pain and suffering, and everything else It’s going to be a lot money
“Who told you to ask me for all this?”
He was all brawn. It was unlikely he’d thought of all these details himself.
Darren’s expression faltered for a second. “No-nobody told me. I know these things!”
Penelope paused. “So, how much do you want?”
“One million.”
Ha. A million!
Penelope felt a mix of disbelief and dark humor. “You’ve got a lot of nerve.”
“You’re rich. It’s nothing to you.”
“Whether we’re rich or not is irrelevant. Before we discuss compensation, we need to determine t
because of my colleague.”
Buck was even et
“We all saw it.”
“You’re his friends. Your testimony doesn’t count as evidence.”
“So what are you saying?”
“We’ll conduct our own investigation.”
Penelope tried to leave again, but Darren once again stood in her way.
