Natalie’s bravado faltered the moment she left, and panic began to set in.

Fortunately, Maria made a phony offer to walk her out, showing her true colors as soon as they were outside.

“How could you agree to do this paternity test with Hamilton!” she demanded.

Natalie raised an eyebrow. “Why shouldn’t I?”

“Aren’t you— aren’t you afraid the test will prove she’s his? That he’ll try to take her from you?”

“You know, I’ve had a change of heart. If my daughter reclaims her birthright, she’ll be Hamilton’s only child, the sole heir to the Amos family. No one would ever dare bully her again. She’d be much better off than she is with me.”

That night, after Kristin was asleep, Natalie finally had a moment to think about the paternity test.

She went out to the balcony and glanced down at the street. The car was still there. It had been following her ever since she left Hamilton’s house. She guessed Hamilton had sent someone to watch her, afraid she would run off with Kristin.

Hamilton was the kind of man who always got what he wanted. That was why she had endured his wrath all those years ago, gritting her teeth and accepting the fake test results.

She couldn’t let him take Kristin. Absolutely not.

After turning it over in her mind, she called Marico.

“You want me to help you deceive Hamilton? What makes you think I would agree to that?”

His voice was slurred; he’d clearly been drinking.

His question stumped her. Why would Marico help her?

Helping her meant facing Hamilton’s retaliation. Anyone with a shred of sense would refuse.

“I… I can only beg you.”

“I have to admit, I do like it.”

Natalie’s lips twitched. “I can’t think of anyone else who would dare to go

that kind of power and courage.”

“Go on.”

“You’re a real man.”

“Anything else?”

“My daughter and I are counting on you.”

“Stay put. I’m on my way!”

Natalie stared at the darkened screen of her phone, momentarily stunned. But she had taken the first step, and there was no turning back. With that thought, she estimated how long it would take him to arrive, then threw on a coat and went downstairs.

Not long after, Marico pulled up.

Putting on a look of delight, Natalie ran and threw herself into his arms.

“What took you so long? I missed you.”

A smirk played on Marico’s lips. “In such a rush, are we?”

Natalie snuck a glance at the black car down the street. Sure enough the driver had rolled down the

window and was taking pictures of them. .

“Someone’s taking photos.”

Marico’s eyes narrowed. “Is that so? Well then, I’d better put on a good show.”

At first, she didn’t understand what he meant. Not until he grabbed her chin and kissed her forcefully.

“Mmph!” She hit his chest.

He leaned close to her ear and whispered mockingly, “Did you really think I’d help you for free?”
