Chapter 119
“What happened p>
Claire leaned forward so fast her forehead almost smacked into the seat in front of her.
Edison rolled down his window and stuck his head out. “Looks like there’s been an accident up ahead p>
A bus and a big truck had crashed, and now a whole line of cars was caught in a pile-up. If Edison hadn’t hit the brakes just in time, they probably would’ve been part of the mess too. Every car in front of them had gotten hit.
“I’m going to get out and check if anyone needs help. You stay here and work on your homework. Don’t go anywhere,” Edison said, glancing back at Claire as he got ready to step out.
Claire hesitated. “I’ll come with you p>
But Edison shook his head. He definitely didn’t want his niece to see something as gruesome as a big accident.
“Claire, just stay in the car. Accident scenes are pretty rough. You really don’t need to see that p>
“I’m fine, really. If someone needs help, I can do something.” Claire grabbed her backpack without thinking.
Edison saw and laughed. “Why are you bringing your bag? Be careful, or your homework’s going to get all messed up p>
“I keep first-aid stuff in here,” Claire said.
That caught Edison off guard. Most people felt prepared if they had a band-aid. Claire had actual first-aid supplies.
“Good thinking,” Edison said, giving her a thumbs-up.
He had totally forgotten that Pandora once mentioned her granddaughter knew a thing or two about medicine.
They got out and started walking forward. More cars had stopped behind them, and lots of people were getting out. Some were on their phones, maybe calling the police or an ambulance, maybe just letting their families know they were okay.
Claire and Edison checked each car as they went. Some people seemed fine, just shaken up. Others looked like they might have mild concussions. One guy had hit his head and was pressing his palm to his bloody forehead while talking on his phone.
Claire took out a spray bottle. “Need some help?” she asked the driver, who had a big belly and blood trickling down his forehead.
The man blinked at Claire, almost
like he thought she was a figment of
his imagination Hey there
gorgeous, what’s your name, hits
eyes wandered in a way Claire didn’t like
Edison wasted no time. He pulled Claire back and slammed the guy’s car door with his foot.
“Don’t bother with creeps like that p>
Claire just nodded. “He seems lively enough. Probably doesn’t need our help anyway p>
“That spray you mentioned, does it actually work?” Edison asked, curious now.
“It does,” Claire said, handing it to him. “I made it myself. If you see anyone bleeding, just spray it on p>
Made it herself? Edison wasn’t sure he believed her, but the James family always had this unshakeable faith in their kids.
They moved on to the next car,
where a young woman sat pressing a tissue to her head, talking on her phone, and telling someone shed been in a crash.
Edison handed the spray back to Claire. “Claire, you go p>
Claire wondered if her uncle was shy around cute girls. This one was especially adorable.
“Hey, miss.” Claire knocked on the car window. “This is a hemostatic spray. I saw you’re bleeding. Want to try it p>
The girl in the car looked surprised that anyone would have something like that with them, but she nodded right away, yes, please, thank you p>
“I feel like I’m losing so much blood,” she said. “My head’s spinning and my vision’s all blurry p>
Claire gave her a look. “Maybe you gave yourself a concussion and then nodded too hard just now p>
The girl cringed and looked embarrassed. “You might be right. I’ll try the spray first p>
