Chapter 807
Cindy was still taking care of Lance when the devastating news hit her out of nowhere.
“York, you’re joking with me, right?”
She never expected that after waiting all these days, all she would get was him calling off their engagement.
“Cindy, there’s no point in keeping this engagement. The Byron family is on the verge of bankruptcy.”
York looked at her with a complicated expression.
Ever since he found out Cindy wasn’t Latham’s biological daughter, his feelings for her had grown tangled.
She was Octavia’s illegitimate child with another man, and his parents absolutely refused to let the engagement continue.
He couldn’t fight his family on this.
Moreover, with the company facing a critical crisis, he had to make sacrifices.
“I don’t care!” Cindy interrupted before York could finish.
“I want to face this together with you.”
Standing off to the side, Tabitha hadn’t planned on speaking, but hearing Cindy’s naivety almost made her laugh.
She might want to face it together with the Byron family, but they clearly weren’t willing to just go bankrupt.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have agreed to her father’s terms.
The Byron family and her own were simply trading what they needed. It was Cindy who ended up as the collateral damage.
York looked at Cindy with guilt, remaining utterly silent.
He didn’t want to let her down, but he had no choice but to let her go.
When Cindy saw she wasn’t getting an answer from York, she turned to Tabitha.
“Ms. James, could you please not steal York from me?”
“Your family is rich. You can have any man you want. Can’t you just give York back to me?”
Tabitha frowned, finding Cindy’s words highly uncomfortable.
“I’m not stealing him from you. If he was dead set on being with you, nobody could take him away.”
“I respect York’s decision. If he doesn’t want to marry me, I can easily talk my dad out of it.”
Tabitha looked completely sincere.
Cindy’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
“Then will your family still help York’s family?”
Tabitha shook her head. “Of course not.”
“We get nothing out of it. Why would we help them?”
The James family had money, but they weren’t stupid.
Cindy didn’t see it that way. She stared at Tabitha. “Can’t you just help York out? it’s a good Ideed and
the Byron family will definitely repay
you in the future.”
“My dad only helps his own people,” Tabitha said, urging her to drop the unrealistic fantasy.
Cindy’s eyes welled with tears as she looked back at York.
“York, is there really no other way?”
York desperately wished there was another way, so he wouldn’t be forced into this marriage.
But if there were any alternatives,
the Byron family wouldn’t have net
agreed to him marrying Tabitha
After all, Tabitha was hardly a prime catch.
And she was two years older than him.
“I’m sorry, Cindy.”
If Cindy wanted to drag this out, he could only try to make it up to her in other ways.
He simply couldn’t keep the promises he had made.
It wasn’t something he could say openly in front of Tabitha.
But he silently kept it in mind.
However, Cindy didn’t cling to him the way York expected. She just shook her head It’s okay, York know you have your reasons.’
“I agree to break the engagement.”
Tabitha was stunned by the sudden turn of events.
Wasn’t this girl just crying and refusing to let go a second ago?
Did she just put up a token fight before tossing in the towel?
While Tabitha found it bizarre, York was deeply moved.
He had thought Cindy would blame him, and he had braced himself for it.
Who knew Cindy would be so understanding?
