Chapter 618
“Which college are you leaning toward?”
The recruiter from Metropolitan University turned to Claire.
“With your math abilities, it would be a genuine loss if you didn’t join our program.”
Claire offered a polite smile. “I actually have my eyes set on a particular major at Cabinda University.”
At once, the other recruiters deflated, their hopes snuffed out.
So, after all the fuss, she was going to pick Cabinda University anyway? Why bother putting herself through the finals at all? She could have simply accepted the offer and been done with it.
“Claire,” the Metropolitan University recruiter tried once more, clinging to hope, “I really think you should reconsider. Wasting a talent like yours in mathematics would be such a shame.”
“Thank you, but I’ve made up my mind.”
Claire didn’t think not choosing math was some kind of waste.
Everyone had their own passions—no rule said she had to do math for the rest of her life.
Seeing they’d lost their chance, the other recruiters shot daggers at the Cabinda University representative.
Figures. They’d all campaigned for half an hour, only for him to scoop up the prize without lifting a finger.
Once the crowd had drifted off, the Cabinda recruiter leaned in. “Claire, are you sure you want to apply to our medical school?”
“The math department is still hoping you’ll reconsider. Math is dry sometimes, maybe even tedious, but the work is valuable.”
Claire nodded. “I understand, sir.”
She had no intention of switching track, but there was no need to argue— contradicting him would only make him double down.
Thinking she might actually reconsider, he let the matter drop and moved on.
Cabinda University’s offer came with a few perks, though not the extravagant ones other schools waved around. Not that Claire really cared about those things.
After escaping the recruiters, she ran straight into the principal, who immediately laid on the praise, delighted that Claire had brought such honor to Silverpeak.
Claire listened with a mild, star-bright smile as the principal spoke.
He didn’t linger, promising the school’s scholarship money would hit her account soon.
What she hadn’t anticipated there were seventy thousand dollars for the city valedictorian.
The transfer landed before she’d even made it back to class.
And it wasn’t just the school-state officials had sent a grant as well.
Suddenly, she became rich. Tuition, rent, food-all her worries about college evaporated.
When she returned to her classroom, the other students were nearly finished with their college applications.
Claire hurried to submit hers as well, losing no time in wrapping things up.
Now that the pressure of applications was over, everyone started chatting about their summer break plans.
All except Cindy, who sat there in silence.
Maybe she really had bombed her exams. Or maybe, with such a wide
gulf between herself and Claire she just couldn’t bear to face her classmates at all. fo FindNovel.net
Not that anyone was focused on
Cindy. With her family name, the
Jameses, it didn’t matter if sheet
flunked every test-she still had her future mapped out
As long as her family wanted, Cindy could still go to a top college, spend a year in a prep program, or simply head overseas.
That was nothing unusual at Silverpeak-some students who struggled academically already had parents making arrangements for them to study abroad.
After all, the “International” in Silverpeak International College wasn’t just for show.
There was even a special senior international class, full of students long set on studying outside the country.
Cindy could simply transfer over and spend her final year there.
Not that she was concerned with any of that. All Cindy felt was self-pity.
Her classmates were all a pack of social climbers-as soon as she’d been confirmed as the true James heiress, they’d clung to her. Now Claire was top of the city, and they were scrambling to befriend her instead.
So shallow.
Cindy bristled with resentment. If she’d grown up with the James family by her side,
being valedictorian would have been her victory, not Claire’s.
