Stella could not finish the sentence.
She did not even know what else there was to say.
She had never expected things to turn out this way.

“Where are you?” Felix asked.
“Guess.”
Felix said nothing.
“Want to hear?”
Stella moved the phone away from her ear.
The fighting below had reached its most intense point.
The sounds carried clearly through the phone to Felix.
“You’re on Mance Island?”
His heart lurched when he heard the commotion.
She had truly lost her mind.
She had actually gone to Mance Island tonight.
Did she have any idea how dangerous it was there?
“Yes,” Stella replied. “I came to see for myself how your men are protecting that old man.”
“I also wanted to see just how determined you are to keep him alive.”
“You lied to me.”
She had told him she was in Seaborne.
Instead, she had gone to Mance Island.
Felix’s chest tightened.
Before he left Eirden, Aaron had already warned him that Stella was only trying to lure him away.
But Felix had still clung to the faintest possibility that she had told him the truth.
Deep down, he had known throughout the entire flight that she might be deceiving him.
Yet he had wanted to believe in that tiny possibility.
In the end, even that hope had failed him.

She truly had lied.
Didn’t you lie to me too?” Stella asked.
“Litt cannot die,” Felix said. “You’re going to be disappointed again tonight.”
His voice was quiet, almost apologetic.
“I know,” Stella replied. “You intend to protect him to the very end.”
“Amos simply isn’t capable of taking him down.”
Felix knew exactly what Amos was capable of after years of watching him clash with Aaron.
Felix could not understand why Amos had decided to go after Litt at all.
It was nothing but reckless overconfidence.
“You’re right,” Stella said. “Amos couldn’t do it alone.”
Ever since learning about Amos’s plan, Stella had spent every day studying his resources and influence.
From his years of conflict with Aaron, she had managed to piece together a fairly accurate picture of his strength.
Felix was right.
Amos did not have enough power to defeat Litt on his own.
Stella did not understand why he had taken on such an ambitious operation either.
But once Amos made his decision, their goals aligned.
That put them on the same side.
Felix intended to protect Litt.
Naturally, Stella would do everything in her power to help Amos bring him down.
“If you know that, why did you still go to Mance Island?” Felix demanded.
“To help Amos, of course.’
The line went silent again.
“Help him?” Felix asked incredulously. “Do you even hear what you’re saying?”
How could she possibly help Amos?
Stella had shown some ability in the past, but that had been limited to dealing with the Wright family and its internal conflicts.
General Litt was entirely different.
“So you’re allowed to protect Litt, but I’m not allowed to help Amos take him down?”
“You know that isn’t what I mean. This isn’t the Wright family. This isn’t something you can involve yourself in. You simply don’t…”
“Have the ability?” Stella cut in sharply.
Felix said nothing.
