Lucas showed up.

The moment he stepped into the study after getting Evan’s call, the thick smell of smoke hit him so hard he almost turned right back around.

“What are you trying to do, set the study on fire?”

The smoke was suffocating.

Evan ignored the irritation in his voice, took another drag, then tossed the cigarette pack at him.

Lucas caught it and immediately threw it back. “One chain-smoker in here is enough. I’m good.”

Just breathing the air in this room was already bad enough.

If he lit one too, the smoke alarm would probably go off.

“So why’d you call me over?”

It was almost dark already.

If this was about dinner, they never ate at home together anyway. They always went out.

Evan flicked ash from the cigarette and looked at him. “When a woman is truly furious, how do you calm her down?”

Lucas paused. “What do you mean?”

Truly furious?

Was he talking about Stella?

Before Evan could say anything else, Lucas beat him to it. “Now you want to calm her down?”

Or had he only just realized she was furious?

That made it sound like he hadn’t known before.

Evan said nothing. He just looked at him.

The look made Lucas uneasy. “Why are you asking me? You’ve lived with her for two years. It’s not like you don’t know what kind of temper she has.”

Evan’s voice dropped. “She really miscarried.”

Lucas froze.

Anything else he had wanted to say died right there.

The moment those words left Evan’s mouth, the whole study seemed to go still.

Evan took the last drag of the cigarette all the way down. “She really miscarried. And I didn’t believe her.”

At that moment, there was something dead in his voice.

Maybe he knew it himself now.

That Stella would never forgive him for this.

That was why she had been pushing so hard for divorce.

Everyone else thought she was just making a scene, that she could never really bear to leave Evan.

But no one expected the scene to keep escalating

Everything Stella had done lately had shaken the whole city.

She wasn’t just making trouble.

She truly wanted out.

Because when she said she’d been pregnant, and that Summer caused her miscarriage, Evarı had never

believed a word of it.

Lucas sucked in a breath. “You’re sure she was really pregnant?”

As far as the pregnancy went, Evan had never believed it.

But Lucas had.

Evan nodded.

Lucas grimaced. “That’s bad.”

Evan’s eyes sharpened instantly at those words.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Lucas shot back. “I’m not the one who set things up so you wouldn’t believe her.”

Why hadn’t Evan believed Stella before?

Wasn’t that partly on his family too?

And besides…

“You’re panicking now, but before this, you didn’t care enough to look into it,

“You were too busy dealing with Summer.”

Lucas kept his tone cautious, but the meaning underneath was obvious.

୮

You brought this on yourself.

Evan’s face darkened further.

Lucas went on, “Looking at me like that won’t change anything. The way you acted before, it didn’t come off like you just didn’t believe she’d miscarried. It came off like even if she had, it still mattered less than whatever was going on with Summer.”
