The moment Summer saw Evan standing in the doorway, her heart started pounding.

They fell just as quickly.

And Summer, under the weight of his presence, felt a wave of panic she couldn’t hide.

“Wh-when did you get here?” she asked shakily.

Evan’s voice was flat. “Are you scared?”

“What?”

That one word made Summer’s heart lurch even harder.

She barely dared meet his eyes now.

“What are you afraid of?” he asked.

“I’m not afraid.”

She said she wasn’t.

But her whole body was trembling, and Mrs. Mendes beside her wasn’t doing any better.

They had dared to build this scheme around the child.

But the truth was, both of them were terrified that Evan would find out.

Everyone knew exactly what kind of reputation Evan had in Harbor City.

If he discovered they had used the baby as part of a setup, no one needed to guess how that would end.

That was why, before doing any of this, Summer and Mrs. Mendes had prepared over and over again.

And deep down, Summer knew perfectly well why Evan cared so much about the child.

It all came back to Steven.

Summer forced herself to look up at Evan, tears trembling in her eyes.

Evan only gave her a cold glance.

And yet now, not a single one of them was here.

The coldness radiating off Evan was unmistakable.

Dora answered, “When Ruby came back and saw that, she was very unhappy.”

Because of Ruby, she had no choice but to have them removed.

She hadn’t expected this.

Now Dora regretted it.

If those bodyguards had still been here, none of this would have happened.

She was truly exhausted from being pulled apart by all of this.

Evan turned to Patrick behind him. “Put them all back.”

“Yes, sir.”

Patrick nodded.

The moment Summer realized Evan was locking her freedom down again in such a cold, controlled way, her
