Chapter 1061
Evan looked at Stella.
Neither of them said a word throughout dinner.
When the meal was over, Stella set down her knife and fork and started upstairs.
“Stella…”
Evan finally called out to her.
He looked at her back, clearly wanting to say something but unable to get the words out.
Stella turned around and looked at him without speaking.
“Does it really have to be this way?” Evan asked.
He was talking about Fiona.
Stella knew perfectly well that he could never choose between Fiona and Yara, yet she had still forced the
decision on him.
“It isn’t me insisting on this,” Stella replied. “You’re the one who made it necessary.”
What did he mean, did it have to be this way?
“None of this had anything to do with me in the first plage. You’re the one dragging me into it.”
He was the one forcing her into the situation.
And now he was asking whether she had to go this far?
Evan’s chest tightened painfully.
“You disgust me, Evan.”
The words struck him hard.
He could hear the truth in her voice.
She genuinely despised him.
That disgust seemed to rise from the deepest part of her.
Evan closed his eyes briefly.
“Yara has to come back.”
“I don’t need to hear that. It has nothing to do with me.”
“She was always good to you.”
“Emotional appeals are useless on me now.”
Her heart had already gone cold.

And yet Evan was still trying to use Yara’s kindness to sway her.
It meant nothing to Stelle
Evan fell silent.
The coldness in her voice made it clear that nothing he said would matter now.
She would not listen.
He drew a deep breath, trying to suppress the crushing pressure in his chest.
It did not help.
As Stella turned away again, Evan spoke.
“What if Fiona goes back to prison?”
That was the greatest concession he could make.
How could he possibly choose for either Fiona or Yara to die?
The furthest he could go was allowing Fiona to lose her freedom again.
That was the limit of what he could accept.
Stella laughed.
“She goes back to prison?”
“Yes,” Evan said. “She’ll serve the punishment you originally gave her.”
He had claimed there was more to Stella’s mother’s death than she knew, but none of that mattered to Stella anymore.
She still needed the Wright family to pay.
Even so, Evan’s supposed concession was laughable.
“And once this is over and Yara is safely back with you, Fiona gets released again. Is that it?”
Evan said nothing.
Stella gave him a mocking look.
“You’re not even hiding what you’re doing.”
What kind of compromise was that?
It was something he could reverse whenever he pleased, yet he still expected her to believe he had made a sacrifice.
It was absurd.
“I swear I won’t interfere again,” Evan said.
He paused.

“No matter how she’s treated in prison, I won’t step in. Will that be enough?”
As far as Evan was concerned, that was already the greatest sacrifice he could force Fiona to make.
If Stella still refused, then he would have no choice but to…
The thought of what might come next made his chest tighten.
He did not want things between them to reach that point.
But if Stella kept forcing him, there might be no other way.
Stella looked at Evan, her gaze cold and dark.
She could tell this was already his limit.
