Chapter 1114
“Don’t believe me?”
From the shock in Leon’s voice, it was obvious he didn’t.
Lately, he had been so focused on finding Jennifer that he hadn’t really stopped to think through everything that had happened.
But if he couldn’t even figure these things out, what good would finding Jennifer do?
Leon hesitated. “I…”
“Think about it carefully. Didn’t Jennifer get even more upset every time Monique talked to her?”
Leon went silent.
His heart gave a sudden jolt.
That was true.
Every time Monique had seen Jennifer, Jennifer had seemed to get even angrier afterward.
Leon had always assumed Jennifer was simply sensitive about Monique because she misunderstood their relationship.
But after Evan pointed it out, things suddenly didn’t seem quite that simple.
“What could Monique possibly have said to her?”
“That’s something you’ll have to ask Monique,” Evan said. “But chances are, she won’t admit anything. She’ll act hurt and accuse you of not trusting her.”
Leon froze.
Wait.
Wasn’t that exactly how Summer used to act around Evan?
He really hadn’t noticed it before.
But now that Evan had spelled it out so clearly, the memories started coming back.
Every time Jennifer and Monique clashed, Monique, who was normally tough and straightforward, would suddenly have tears in her eyes the moment she saw Leon.
And the way she always rushed to explain herself first had made Leon automatically assume Jennifer was the one at fault.
Especially when Monique seemed to be defending Jennifer.
Yet somehow, the things she said only made Jennifer even more upset.
Leon sucked in a sharp breath.

“Monique really did that?”
He could barely believe she was capable of something like that.
“You know Monique too. She…”
Evan cut him off. “People’s hearts are complicated. How well can you ever truly know someone?”
Leon fell silent.
That was true.
How could anyone ever completely understand another person?
“Monique…”
Leon felt like he was losing his mind.
They had grown up together.
She had always been blunt and tomboyish, the kind of person who supposedly didn’t play mind games.
But after everything Evan had just said, Leon’s expression darkened.
“Either way,” Evan said, “even if you find Jennifer now, there’ll only be more trouble waiting for you.”
Leon irritably lit a cigarette.
“I’m still going to find her.”
“Can you protect her completely?”
Leon paused, the cigarette held between his fingers.
“I didn’t before. But this time, I can.”
Before, he hadn’t believed Monique was capable of any of this, so he had never thought to guard against it.
But things were different now.
Evan had already laid everything out for him.
Leon was going to get to the bottom of it.
Especially when it came to Monique.
The two talked for a while longer before finally hanging up.
Leon sat alone in his office , smoking one cigarette after another.
Shane came in with some documents.
Leon looked up at her.
“Still nothing?”

He had sent countless people out to search lately.
He had even hired private investigators.
But no matter who looked, not a single lead on Jennifer had turned up.
Stella was dead.
And Jennifer seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth with her.
Shane shook her head. “Nothing.”
Leon was already on edge.
Hearing that answer only made his frustration worse.
Nothing.
Always nothing.
Every update brought him the same damn answer.
“I’ve spent all that money just to find one person, and none of them can give me a single lead?”
He practically ground the words out through clenched teeth.
He really was going insane.
If he couldn’t find Jennifer soon, he was going to lose his mind completely.
Though, truthfully, he already had.
