Chapter 1165
[ 642 words ]
“ Who decided that? You? Then you can marry her yourselves.”
Leon’s voice dripped with mockery.
They could with him.
What a joke.
say the marriage was “decided” all they wanted, but none of it had anything to do
All these years, Leon had never once imagined himself as someone others could simply control.
And now his own mother was telling him everything had already been arranged when he, the actual groom, hadn’t even known about it.
Vivian’s face tightened.
“You…”
“Give it up. I’m not marrying Monique.”
Leon had never sounded more certain.
Maybe part of that certainty came from regret.
Back when things had first gone wrong between Jennifer and Monique, if he had sided with Jennifer just a little more, if he had been even slightly firmer, things between them might never have reached this point.
That phone call with Evan had been a wake–up call too,
Evan had wavered between Stella and Summer again and again until everything became impossible to undo.
Leon had at least come to his senses sooner.
Sooner than Evan had.
He could only hope it wasn’t too late.
No matter what Vivian said, Leon refused to budge.
In the end , she stormed out in fury.
Before leaving , however , she threw one last warning over her shoulder.
“You’d better not fight the marriage to Monique . ”
If he simply let things proceed, it would be better for everyone.
Otherwise …
Vivian didn’t finish the threat
She didn’t need to.
The hardness in her tone made it obvious that if Leon resisted, things were going to get ugly .
Once she was gone, Leon remained on the couch.
He lit a cigarette and took several hard drags.
He had never been much of a smoker before.
Now he smoked constantly.
Maybe that was what happened as a man got older.
Sometimes the pressure from your own family alone was enough to suffocate you.
Leon finished three cigarettes before finally getting up and heading upstairs.
At the turn of the staircase, he stopped.
Jennifer was leaning against the wall.
A robe was draped around her shoulders.
The marks on her neck were still painfully obvious, enough to show just how out of control Leon had been before Vivian arrived.
Their eyes met.
Leon froze for a moment.
Then he walked over and rubbed the top of Jennifer’s head.
“You heard all of that?”
Jennifer didn’t answer,
She simply looked at him .
Her silence left Leon a little helpless .
He couldn’t tell what she was thinking.
Still, he grinned.
“ Didn’t I do pretty well ? ”
He was shamelessly fishing for praise.
As far as Leon was concerned, at least in this one thing, he had done better than Evan.
Back then, Evan had completely broken Stella’s heart. –
He had never given her even the smallest reason to believe he would choose her .
Whenever it came down to Stella or Summer, Evan had always sided with Summer.
Every single time.
Leon wasn’t doing that now.
This time, he was standing firmly on Jennifer’s side.
Jennifer’s eyes flickered with something bitter.
“What do you want me to say?”
If she had to be fair, then yes.
Right now , Leon was doing better than Evan had.
But she had also heard how forceful Vivian had been downstairs.
This wasn’t going to be easy.
After everything that happened before, Leon and Monique should have been completely impossible.
Yet somehow , Vivian had managed to turn things around.
And now the entire Redson family had accepted Monique again.
Vivian had always liked her.
With the whole family suddenly supporting that marriage , the situation was spinning out of control again.
So what if Leon had handled this one confrontation well ?
His entire family still wanted him with Monique.
Leon looked at her .
“ You don’t have to say anything. Just remember how I’m treating you this time . ”
