Chapter 1253
[ 617 words ]
In the dim room, Evan felt as though his entire world had collapsed.
“Win or lose.”
He murmured the words softly, and his chest felt even emptier.
Was this really what had become of him and Stella?
They had once been so good together.
So how had everything between them been reduced to nothing but winning and losing?
What a cruel way to put it.
But what unsettled him even more was the way Stella had said it.
Fearless.
Indifferent.
As though nothing mattered anymore.
Even if his hatred eventually killed her, she wouldn’t care.
Even through the phone, Evan had been able to feel the emptiness inside her.
Yes.
Emptiness.
After disappearing for all this time, Stella seemed as though everything inside her had been hollowed out.
She wasn’t simply fearless anymore.
She was empty.
She cared about nothing.
Not even whether she lived or died.
And everything between them, all the love and hatred they had once shared, had ultimately been reduced to three words.
Win or lose.
She didn’t even care if she was the one who lost.
Ever since learning that Stella was still alive, Lucas had come to see Evan almost every day.
As far as Lucas was concerned, this whole thing had hit Evan like a nightmare he couldn’t wake up from.

Especially after learning that Stella’s revenge against the Wright family had been based on a mistake.
Evan was visibly losing weight by the day.
He had even stopped caring about work.
“In a way, all of this started with Steven’s death,” Lucas said.
Evan looked at him.
“Steven?”
“Didn’t it?”
At the mention of Steven, Lucas turned toward Evan.
When it came down to it, so many of the conflicts had begun surfacing after Steven died.
Evan’s chest had already felt tight.
Now it became even harder to breathe.
“Yeah. He died.”
His voice trailed off.
Steven had died and left the entire mess behind for Evan to deal with.
When Steven was still alive, Evan rarely took Stella back to the Wright family home.
He knew the people there didn’t like her, so he kept her away from them whenever he could.
But after Steven died, everything seemed to fall onto Evan’s shoulders.
And Steven had died because of Frank Holland and Summer.
The thought of how Evan had continued taking care of Summer after Steven’s death made his stomach turn.
“When it comes down to it, I was blind.”
If he had seen Summer for who she really was sooner, maybe none of this would have happened.
Lucas nodded.
“Yeah. After Steven died, if you’d tried even a little harder to see things from Stella’s perspective, maybe none of this would’ve gotten this bad.”
Evan fell silent.
See things from Stella’s perspective.
Those words made his chest ache.
Had he ever really done that?

Chapter 1244
Even when Steven was alive, hardly ever.
And after Steven died, not even once.
“What are you planning to do now?” Lucas asked after a while.
He was talking about Stella.
Back when everyone believed she was dead, Evan had refused to accept it.
Now they knew she was alive.
And knowing Evan’s personality, Lucas had no idea how far he might take things this time.
Evan remained silent.
What was he planning to do?
After a long while, he looked at Lucas.
“You think I’m going to keep going after her, don’t you?”
“I didn’t say that. I just don’t think you’ll let go that easily.”
Evan lowered his gaze.
“But I hate her.”
That fight with Felix had forced him to see a lot of things clearly.
But it still couldn’t erase the fact that Stella had made a terrible mistake.
And the consequences of that mistake had been enormous.
The entire Wright family had paid the price.
