Chapter 1280
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
“Whether it is or not doesn’t really matter.”
Stella honestly didn’t care that much about any of this.
But seeing how worked up Aaron was now…
Apparently, her instincts had been right.
Yara really did hold an unusual place in his heart.
Stella and the Wright family really were cursed to keep crossing paths.
She had finally managed to cut Evan out of her life completely.
And now there was a chance Yara might somehow end up becoming her sister–in–law.
“But there’s one thing I should remind you of,” Stella said. “The Merlin family probably won’t tolerate you having feelings for another woman.”
Aaron’s voice hardened.
“I just got word that Father sent people after Evan.”
Stella said nothing.
“Are you sure you’re not going to do anything?”
Each word came through clenched teeth.
“No.”
Stella’s answer was immediate.
“And don’t forget, you were the one who ordered the Wright family taken down.”
People kept saying that whole mistake had started because of her.
But it hadn’t.
She had simply been part of that mistake. She wasn’t the one who caused it.
“You were the one who actually made the move.”
Aaron fell silent.
His grip tightened around the phone.
Yes.
He had been the one who went after the Wright family.
“And all that evidence came from your people. Your people got it wrong, and you were the one who acted on it.”
“Yet all of you keep trying to dump the entire thing on me, as if I was the one who caused everything.” 1.
Stella gave a cold laugh.
Did they really think they could pile every bit of blame onto her shoulders?
Too bad.
Stella had never been the kind of person who would quietly take responsibility for everyone else’s mistakes.
“You really don’t have any feelings left for him…?”
“None.”
Stella cut him off before he could finish.
What else was there to ask?
There had been nothing left between her and Evan for a long time.
And now that she had finally sorted everything out in her own mind, she was even colder toward him than before.
She hung up without giving Aaron another chance to speak.
Then she handed the phone back to Russ.
That really had been unexpected.
Aaron had actually called her to talk about Evan.
If it had been about Yara, Stella wouldn’t have been nearly as surprised.
But Evan?
A mocking smile touched her lips.
“Even a beast has someone it favors.”
Russ said nothing.
A beast.
She meant Aaron.
And favoritism…
That was something no one would have expected to exist in Aaron Hogarth’s world.
Stella showed no reaction when she learned Michael had sent people after Evan.
Aaron, however, reacted very differently.
The moment he finished speaking with Stella, he called Michael.
“Father.”
Michael was still in his hospital room.
He had just finished reviewing the last of his paperwork and looked visibly tired.
He seemed to already know exactly why Aaron was calling.
His voice turned cold.
“So you were never serious about marrying into the Merlin family after all.”
Aaron’s expression darkened.
“Were you testing me?”
“Aaron, when it comes to Stella, you’ve disappointed me far too much.”
There was unmistakable danger in Michael’s voice.
Aaron hadn’t even said why he was calling.
But Michael already knew.
What kind of man was Evan Wright?
He was the man who had hurt Stella more deeply than anyone.
And now Aaron wanted to protect him because of some woman?
Even though Aaron hadn’t outright asked Michael to spare Evan, Michael was already furious.
