Chapter 842
Even more unexpectedly, he hadn’t anticipated the deep, hidden connection between Vesta and Charlene.
On top of that, Charlene was actually a student of Dr. Wagner.
Just as he was pondering this, Irma Henderson’s call came in…
…
Charlene had gone back to sleep and didn’t wake up until a little past one in the afternoon.
There were still matters to handle at PrimeStar Technologies, so after a quick bite to eat, she headed back to the office.
Stewart had also just arrived.
After working for a while, Dr. Wagner called and told them to head to the Watson family’s house for dinner that evening.
When they arrived at the Watson estate, York came out to greet them. “You’re here. Come on in.”
Charlene gave a small nod.
“I heard PrimeStar ran into some issues,” York said conversationally. “Is everything alright?”
Out of politeness, York directed the question at both Charlene and Stewart.
But Stewart simply raised an eyebrow and didn’t answer.
Charlene had to pick up the slack. “It’s fine. Everything is mostly resolved.”
Once inside, they saw that Dr. Wagner had already arrived. Dalton was there, too.
Upon seeing them, Dalton immediately looked in their direction.
Stewart and Charlene completely ignored him.
They first greeted Hickey, Campbell, and Mrs. Watson before respectfully turning to Dr. Wagner. “Dr. Wagner.”
“Mhm,” Dr. Wagner responded.
Just then, Abelard arrived.
He chuckled. “Is everyone here?”
“Mr. Ramirez, please have a seat,” York offered.
Charlene and Stewart also offered their greetings.
Dalton was the last to speak up. “Dad.”
Abelard acted as though he had only just noticed him. “Oh, you’re here early.”
Dalton stayed completely silent.
After the gala ended last night, he had tried calling his father but couldn’t get through. He followed up with a text, but still hadn’t received a reply.
Abelard was always swamped with work, so Dalton hadn’t thought
much of the unreturned met net
But when York called him that afternoon-explaining that Charlene, Stewart, Dr. Wagner and his father to the Watson
were all coming
house for dinner, and that his father had asked York to invite him
along-Dalton finally realized the
truth. His father had definitely seen his message all along.
He was deliberately ignoring him.
Abelard paid no further attention to his son. He sat down and began chatting with
Hickey, Charlene, and the others.
Not long after, everyone moved to the dining room.
York took the seat right next to Charlene.
Once the food was served and a new wave of conversation had started, York spun the lazy Susan and turned to Charlene. “I noticed you really liked Braised Goose Feet before. It happens to be Faye’s specialty, so I specifically asked her to make it. It’s delicious, you should try some.”
York mentioned this because the cafeteria at the Base where Dr. Wagner worked also served a signature goose feet dish. Whenever Charlene was there, she would always order it, a detail York had carefully committed to memory.
At this, the rest of the table looked over.
Stewart and Dalton obviously knew about York’s feelings for Charlene, but they hadn’t expected him to be so bold. He made no effort to hide his affection in front of the elders, openly displaying his interest for
everyone to see.
At this, Hickey and Abelard paused for a moment, though it was unclear if they had
picked up on the underlying tension.
Dr. Wagner acted as if he hadn’t noticed a thing, quietly eating his meal.
Charlene hesitated slightly before saying, “Thank you.”
The others didn’t say anything further, returning to their meals and conversation. After dinner, it started pouring rain outside.
Charlene was watching the rain through the window when Dalton sat down beside her. She glanced back, saw him, and said nothing.
Like Moran, he had also sent people to Yaleborough last night to do some digging.
He had confirmed that everything revealed at the gala about the Hawkins and Spencer families was completely true.
He looked at her and finally spoke up. “About the past… I was entirely out of line. I’m sorry.”
