Chapter 1236

Despair!
How had it come to this?
Felix had only ever wanted to give her the life she wanted.
So how had he ended up giving her nothing but despair?
Was being with him really that unbearable?
She would rather give her life to Evan than keep walking forward with him?
Felix’s chest ached so badly he could barely breathe.
“Stella, you really don’t have a heart,” he said hoarsely.
If she had even the slightest bit of one left, she wouldn’t…
“My heart has been gone for a long time,” Stella said. “It was carved out of me a long time ago.”
Evan had taken a piece of it.
So had Aaron.
So had Felix.
And in the end…
So had she herself.
Having a heart was terrifying.
She didn’t even want one anymore.
Felix fell silent.
Hearing her say that her heart had been hollowed out made his own chest ache even more.
And with that one sentence, every hope he had still been clinging to for their future shattered completely.
His hands tightened around her shoulders.
Tighter.
Then finally, they loosened.
Felix seemed to use every ounce of strength he had left when he said,
“Go.”
Stella froze.
“I’ll let you leave,” he continued. “Go live the life you actually want. Find somewhere no one can reach you.

Somewhere without Evan.
Without him.
Without the Hogarth family.
Wasn’t that what she had always wanted?
Then she should go.
Just not back to Harbor City.
Just don’t go back and offer her life to Evan.
Stella went completely still.
She stared at Felix in disbelief.
Ever since they came to the town near Sima Mountain, his people had watched her constantly.
Even when Felix left, she had never had a real chance to escape.
Even with Remi’s help last time, she had failed.
Felix had never once intended to let her go.
Before the truth about Evan and the Wright family came out, Stella had even believed she might never escape Felix for the rest of her life.
And yet now…
He was telling her to leave?
She stared at him, unable to believe what she was hearing.
Felix’s voice turned rough.
“If you’d rather die than have any kind of future with me…”
He stopped.
Then slowly turned his back to her.
His shoulders trembled slightly.
So some mistakes really couldn’t be undone.
Once they were made, there was no going back.
Regret didn’t change anything.
Felix regretted it.
More than he could put into words.

But what good did that do?
What he had done was done.
There was no erasing it.
No matter how hard he tried, he could never make it disappear.
“Stella, I’m letting you go.”
His voice was low.
“Leave. Go live the life you want. But don’t go back to Harbor City.”
That was his final boundary.
His last concession.
If he was going to lose her, then he would lose her completely.
And if he couldn’t have her, then Evan wouldn’t either.
“Don’t let me hear anything about you again.”
Felix paused.
“And don’t let Evan find out where you are either.”
Stella stood behind him without speaking.
She just looked at his back in silence.
Her nose suddenly stung.
She had spent all this time dreaming of getting away from Felix.
But she had never once imagined that he would be the one to let her go.
“As for what’s between you and Evan, I’ll deal with it for you.”
Felix closed his eyes as he said it.
Stella looked at him in shock.
“You…”
“Don’t you believe the reason the investigation into your mother went wrong was because my people fed Gray the wrong information?”
Felix cut her off and turned back around.
Their eyes met again.
And this time, Felix clearly saw it.

The exhaustion and emptiness that had filled Stella’s eyes moments ago were gone.
At last, there was something else there.
Felix smiled faintly.
Well.
That was rare.
These days, getting any expression out of her at all had become almost impossible.
