Chapter 1047
Claire turned her head in disbelief and peered into the vehicle. The moment she locked eyes with Wilbur, a massive sigh of relief escaped her lips.
The cab driver was still groveling. “I’m so incredibly sorry! My passenger was in a rush, and I accidentally bumped your car. It wasn’t intentional, I swear!”
Wilbur had originally planned to handle it strictly by the book, but his expression shifted when he saw Claire. “You’re the passenger?”
She nodded. “Yeah.”
“Then don’t worry about it.” He turned to the cab driver. “Is your car still drivable?”
The driver glanced at his crushed front bumper. “I’m afraid not.”
There was a distinct difference in build quality between the two vehicles.
His hood was completely crumpled, while the Maybach merely had a scratch on its protective film.
Wilbur instructed his own driver to stay behind and sort out the insurance details.
He stepped out of the car and looked at Claire. “Where are you headed? I’ll give you a ride.”
Claire was desperately pressed for time, so she didn’t refuse.
But before getting in, she turned to Wilbur’s driver. “I’ll cover the repair costs. Please front the money for now and send me the bill later.”
The cab driver looked ready to weep with gratitude.
Wilbur slid behind the wheel to drive her himself.
On the way, he asked, “Isn’t today your best friend’s birthday? Are you rushing to the InterContinental Hotel? It’s a bit early for that, isn’t it?”
He was in town for Noreen’s party too, so he naturally assumed she was heading to the same venue.
But Claire shook her head. “I’m not going to the hotel. I’m rushing to meet Felix.”
Wilbur’s grip on the steering wheel unconsciously tightened.
He paused for a few seconds before asking, “Oh, finalizing the divorce?”
She shook her head again. “No. Canceling it.”
The moment the words left her mouth, he slammed on the brakes.
Caught off guard, Claire was thrown forward against her seatbelt.
She blinked in confusion, wondering why he had stopped so violently.
Wilbur’s fingers dug into the leather steering wheel, his knuckles turning stark white.
A deathly silence descended on the cabin, broken only by the low hum of the idling engine.
He kept his eyes fixed on the digital dashboard, his Adam’s apple bobbing slowly as he swallowed hard.
It took him a few seconds to
process his own outburst. Slowly loosening his death grip on the wheel, he turned his head to look at her.

The face that usually sported a careless, playboy smirk was now unnervingly blank.
He forced a faint smile, his tone light
but dripping with his trademark biting sarcasm “Sorry Zoned out for a second it’s just… hearing someone willingly throw away their freedom to go dumpster-diving for memories is a bit… jarring
He paused, his gaze landing on Claire’s suddenly pale face.
A turbulent storm of emotions swirled in the depths of his eyes, but he ruthlessly
buried it under a thin veneer of mockery.
The sharp insult made Claire flush with humiliation.
She pressed her lips together tightly before replying. “I’m not dumpster-diving. I just… I want to help Noreen.”
This time, it was Wilbur’s turn to freeze.
“Staying married helps Noreen?”
“Yeah. Felix told me that if I called off the divorce, he’d give me a ten percent stake in the Quigley Group. That should be enough money to bail her out of this current mess.”
Hearing the real reason, Wilbur let out a massive internal sigh of relief.
His tone instantly returned to its casual drawl. “Does Noreen know you’re making
this monumental sacrifice for her?”
“I didn’t tell her.”
Because if she did, Noreen would absolutely forbid it!
