The moment Noreen left, Seth emerged from the adjoining room. Wade didn’t even glance at him. Only Evelyn asked in surprise, “Seth, were you in there the whole time? How come we didn’t hear a thing?” Before Seth could answer, Wade chimed in with a cold taunt. “When a mouse sees a cat, does it dare make a sound?” Jude understood the insinuation and couldn’t help but let out a snort. Then, catching Seth’s warning glare, he forced it back in, his face turning beet red. Evelyn was the only one in the room who didn’t get it. “What mouse? There can’t be mice in the hospital, can there?” Seth’s handsome face was cold. “I’m leaving. You take care of yourself.” As if on purpose, Wade asked a question he normally never would. “So, are you coming tomorrow?” Jude managed to hold it in all the way downstairs. It wasn’t until he had dropped Seth off at his current residence that he finally couldn’t resist asking, “Seth, you’re probably not going to the hospital tomorrow, right? Noreen said she’s visiting Mr. Harcourt again. You might run into her.” Since he was just going to hide anyway, it was better not to go at all. To his surprise, Seth’s answer was decisive. “Of course I’m going. Why wouldn’t I?” “But…” Jude hesitated. Seth retorted, “He’s my father. Shouldn’t I go see him?” Jude’s mouth twitched. Did he really believe that himself? True to her word, Noreen went to see Wade the next day, bringing some fruit and expensive nutritional supplements with her. Wade’s color was noticeably better than the day before. After a short visit, Noreen got up to leave. As she came out of the room, she saw Jude standing by a large vase not far away, pretending to look at his phone. Noreen paused for two seconds, then changed her mind. Instead of heading for the elevators, she walked straight toward Jude. Seeing Noreen approach out of the corner of his eye, Jude was so scared he nearly dropped his phone. “Is Seth here?” Noreen didn’t beat around the bush and got straight to the point. Jude could feign composure over the phone, but face-to- face, his acting skills were clearly not up to par. He stammered, “Huh? Seth? Seth’s not in Rivercrest City! I don’t know where he is! I’m just here to see Mr. Harcourt. I don’t know anything.” His words were a jumbled mess, his face practically screaming ‘guilty.’ Noreen exposed his lie without a flicker of emotion. “First you say he’s not in Rivercrest City, then you say you don’t know where he is. Do you even think before you lie?” Jude was on the verge of tears. He had said it before: Noreen intimidated him. And now, he had cracked after just a few sentences. “I mean, Seth went to the Middle East to watch the fireworks.” Noreen’s mouth twitched. Could he come up with a more ridiculous story? “Then please tell Seth that if he’s got any guts, he should hide from me for the rest of his life! He can be a coward forever!” Jude scratched the back of his head. He wouldn’t dare relay that message. He didn’t have the guts to. Noreen was angry, though she wasn’t quite sure what she was angry about. In short, her emotions were a complicated mess.
