Chapter 998
Why put on a show of declining the first call?
Didn’t he think it was completely pointless?
He was just going to answer it in the end anyway.
When the second call went through, Madeline finally let out a sigh of relief.
Pretending she knew nothing, she simply asked in a caring tone if he had eaten
lunch yet.
Felix said he had.
Madeline paused, then asked, “Did you eat at the office?”
In a rare moment, Felix lied. “Yeah, things are a bit busy today.”
Hearing this, Madeline’s heart completely sank.
She knew he was lying to her, yet she could only play along. “Then get back to work. I won’t bother you.”
“Alright.” Felix gave a brief, perfunctory response and hung up.
It was the first time he had actively ended a conversation with her.
Although Felix quickly returned to the hospital room, Claire still didn’t spare him a single glance.
Felix sat in the room for over half an hour before finally being called away by a work emergency.
Before leaving, he spoke to Claire.
Even though Claire never looked at him.
“I need to go handle some work matters.”
He explicitly emphasized that it was work, as if afraid she might misunderstand.
Then he added, “I’ll be back in about half an hour. Is there anything you want to eat? I can bring it back for you.”
Claire deliberately replied, “Then bring me some of my favorite pastries.”
Just as Felix was about to ask which ones she liked.
Claire scoffed. “Oh wait, you probably don’t even know what pastries I like. So don’t strain yourself. If I’m hungry, I’ll buy my own food. Since you have all this free time, you should go take care of your little mistress. After all, she never could manage to stand on her own two feet.”
The sarcasm in her words was piercing.
A couple married for five years, yet the husband didn’t even know what his wife liked to eat.
It was a complete joke.
Felix’s brows furrowed sharply, his expression turning grim.
He was probably angry because she had insulted his precious mistress.
But in the end, Felix didn’t say a word. He simply turned and walked away.
He likely kept his temper in check for fear of waking the old woman.
If only he could choke on that anger.
Claire thought to herself.
Then she would level up, get rich, and have a dead husband. She would be an absolute winner in life.
…
Meanwhile.
After Felix hung up, Madeline threw a massive tantrum.
She smashed the freshly delivered food all over the floor.
As Jean cleaned up the mess, she cursed Claire alongside her daughter. “It’s all that bitch’s fault f she wasn’t clinging to Mr. Quigley, he would never ignore you!”
Madeline was boiling with resentment, and just when she had nowhere to vent it, the police arrived.
She immediately launched a complaint. “How are you doing your jobs? Why did you
let my attacker go? You should have locked her up!”
Jean chimed in from the side, “Exactly, officer. Letting the person who assaulted my daughter walk free makes us feel very unsafe isn’t protecting the public your
responsibility?”
Jean then added, “By the way, the attacker is in this very hospital right now. Up on the eighth floor! Go arrest her!”
The officers looked at the mother and daughter with complicated expressions.
Madeline snapped at the female officer in annoyance, “Why are you looking at me like that? Didn’t you hear me tell you to go arrest her?”
The officer stopped wasting time and stated firmly, “We are here today to ask Ms. Lynwood to cooperate with an investigation. Considering you are still hospitalized, we can conduct the questioning right here in your room.”
Jean was stunned. “Questioning? Why are you questioning my daughter?”
