Jayson lifted his gaze and looked at Renee, his younger sister who had always lived an easy, comfortable life.
“What’s a kid like you doing worrying about stuff like that?”
Renee grumbled, “Jay, you should be thanking me. I’m not joking about this! I’m already 18. Once I graduate, I can start looking for someone gentle, handsome, and from a family with a background similar to ours.
“Overall, it’ll be good for the Larkin family. At least my marriage won’t cause any trouble for us. And once I have a lovely baby, you and Ariel can raise it yourselves.

Jayson stared at her, speechless. He could tell she was completely serious–she’d even worked out the details. Knowing Renee, she had probably spent a lot of time thinking about this absurd plan.
“That won’t be necessary. You shouldn’t concern yourself with matters like that,” Jayson said at last, his voice quiet but firm. He had no desire to argue over such nonsense. His gaze shifted toward Ariel.
It was then that he noticed that her eyes were open. She had been listening.
Jayson’s eyes brightened. He held her hand. “How are you feeling?”
Ariel had actually been awake for a while, though her eyelids had felt too heavy to lift. She had heard everything Renee said and already had a rough idea of what had happened to her.
Her throat was dry and sore. “I’m fine,” she managed.
Ariel’s mind was still foggy since she had just come out of the coma. Still, the first thing she did was look Jayson over from head to toe. Worry for his injuries still lingered in her mind.
Jayson was still wearing the patient’s gown. His exact physical condition was impossible to gauge as the clothes completely hid his injuries. Fortunately, he appeared to be on the mend, suggesting his recovery was proceeding well.
A small weight lifted from her chest. She was genuinely relieved he was alright.
Renee clutched her backpack tightly when she noticed Ariel had awakened. She awkwardly scratched her head and asked, “Should I go get the doctor to check on her, Jay?”
Jayson glanced at Ariel,
Ariel didn’t feel any serious discomfort. Even the post–surgery pain had dulled after several days. She shook her head. “It’s alright.”
Seeing that Ariel could still talk, Renee fidgeted and muttered, “Well, I’ll go then. You two probably have things to discuss. I’ve got other stuff to do anyway.”
She gave Ariel one last look–making sure she really was okay–before slipping out of the room.

Jayson didn’t stop her. Instead, he placed an extra pillow under Ariel’s head. “Do you want to have some water?”
Ariel subconsciously caressed her lower abdomen. She turned her eyes to Jayson. “Is it removed?”
Jayson paused briefly. He looked Ariel in the eye for a moment before nodding. “Yes. It was removed through laparoscopy. The doctor just removed the stitches earlier today when you were still unconscious.”
Ariel couldn’t exactly put the feelings she was experiencing at the moment into words. She had known this moment would come, tried to prepare herself for it, but the dull ache in her chest was still unbearable.
She merely dropped her gaze, silent. She refused to let her sadness show.
It wasn’t as though she had a choice. She had to have her uterus removed sooner or later. But now, she would never be able to have a child of her own.
Jayson could sense the sadness weighing on her. He gently brushed his thumb against her pinky.
“You’ll be healthy from now on,” he said softly. “No more pain, no more suffering. The doctors said your recovery looks promising. Ari, nothing matters more than you being safe and well.”
His tone was tender, but Ariel’s thoughts were still in turmoil.
She exhaled shakily and tried to withdraw her hand. “I’d like to be alone for a while… if that’s alright.”
She needed some time to process everything.
