Jayson had managed to reach Janice once. From bits and pieces, he learned that Ariel wasn’t with her. Worse, no one from Ariel’s convoy had made contact since the chaos began.
That was a terrible sign that made Jayson uneasy.
Ahead, flames tore through the horizon. His hired security team had already split up to search.
Ariel had that distinct Solarean look, and with her beauty, she would definitely stand out in a crowd.
Jayson’s expression was grim. This area was supposed to be a designated safe zone, yet it had turned into a battlefield. No one could have predicted it.
The ground was covered in gravel. He kept checking his phone as he walked.
There were plenty of places in the world suffering from turmoil, but he had no mind for any of it right now. All he wanted was to find Ariel, fast.
Her health was fragile. She couldn’t stand too much strain. He couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering, not even a little.
Just then, a sudden shot came from behind, aimed straight at Jayson.
The bodyguard beside him reacted instantly, pulling him out of the way just in time.
Frowning, Jayson ducked into the shadows and looked into the distance.
There, he saw several heavily armored vehicles escorting one in the middle. It was obvious that the convoy was heading straight for him with clear intent.
“Mr. Larkin, they seem to be looking for someone,” the bodyguard said seriously. “I heard they’re looking for a Solarean.”

“Can you tell who they are?” he asked.
The bodyguard, used to operating in gray zones, crouched behind a crumbling wall and peered out. “That symbol … The Nielsen family?”
The moment Jayson heard the name, his expression darkened.
Of course he knew the Nielsen family.
Back then, he had dug into Nancy’s family for generations, leaving no secret uncovered. He knew every detail about the people she had met before.
He also knew that Nancy and Sarah used to have some connection with the Nielsen family from Isbell. Nancy had even had a brief involvement with their second son.

Jayson made a split–second decision. “Let’s move. Avoid them and regroup with the others.”
The Nielsen group had numbers, so it was safer to regroup with the team first.
But Jayson wasn’t going anywhere.
Of course, with people from the Nielsen family around, leaving wouldn’t be easy. He would probably be stuck here for a while.
Jayson moved quickly. By now, most of his injuries had healed, and his movements weren’t much affected. The bodyguard followed his lead completely. The two slipped away through a hidden path in another direction. Across the lot, Gustavo Nielsen got out of the car, irritated. He immediately spotted two figures quietly approaching a vehicle in the dark. He waved, unwilling to let even the slightest possibility slip by.
He lit a cigarette. “Go get them over there!”
Just then, a pair of headlights swept across the area. The beam caught Jayson full–on.
The Solarean features caught Gustavo off guard, and his expression changed sharply. “It’s him!” Jayson glanced back and realized just how sharp the Nielsens were. They were really hunting him. His eyes darkened with tension. If they were this focused on him, Ariel’s safety was even more at risk. When Gustavo spotted Jayson, he recognized him almost instantly.
Without hesitation, he jumped into his car, his eyes burning with revenge. “Go after him! Don’t let him get away!”
Once they latched onto him, they would be impossible to shake off.
Jayson hurriedly got into the car. The bodyguard turned the wheel sharply and floored the gas pedal.
The Nielsens were 600 feet behind, hot on their tail.
