Chapter 793

The cars turned around and left.
Ariel stared at the vehicle leading them. She had no idea where they were heading.

She glanced at her colleague’s not–so–smart phone and quickly sent real–time coordinates and route details to Jayson. For safety, she forwarded the details to Janice as well.
Once they got back into an area with a signal, the messages would be sent automatically.
Janice had been in the first group evacuated. The chaos had left her no chance to find Ariel. She was restless with
worry.
Ariel’s phone was dead. When Janice asked the officials in charge, they all gave the same response. “I’m sorry. We’re still trying to establish contact and verify the situation. You’ll be notified immediately once there’s news.”
“So you’re saying Ari might still be there?” Her breathing grew heavy, and her eyes reddened with panic.
Her calf wound, injured during the hurried escape, started bleeding again from her anxiety. But she ignored the pain and kept asking the same question over and over.
“I’m sorry. We can’t confirm anything right now.”
That answer shattered whatever calm she had left. Tears blurred her vision.
Unlike Ariel, she couldn’t stay calm in the face of serious danger. She dared not let her mind wander toward the
worst.
Just then, a group of people hurried in from outside.
Janice spotted Wade, who was leading the group, almost immediately. Like seeing a savior, she hobbled toward him. “Wade, where did you just come from? Do you know what’s going on near the base?”

Janice couldn’t hold back anymore. She gripped Wade’s sleeve tightly. “Can you help me find Ari?”
Wade was a special operations pilot. Theoretically, he could fly there himself and even get Ariel out.

He understood her panic, but as he looked down at his sleeve, creased from her grip, he said stiffly, “I’m not allowed. I can’t deploy without orders.”
Every mission required authorization.
Janice’s face went pale. “But this is an emergency, isn’t it?”
“Emergency or not, it’s still a private matter,” Wade replied, unmoved.
His cold, by–the–book attitude cut deep. Janice’s grip on his sleeve loosened. “So if it were me trapped in there, you’d still just look the other way and wait for orders?”
Her words made Wade feel uncomfortable. He pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
Janice’s eyes turned red as she stared up at him. “And what if it were Alicia instead?”
That made Wade frown instinctively. He was clearly displeased that she had even brought Alicia up.
Janice understood immediately. He couldn’t even imagine Alicia being in danger.
She was standing here, bleeding, and he hadn’t even noticed. But last time, when Alicia had scraped her knees, he had dropped everything and rushed to her side immediately.
The contrast made Janice realize something.
Janice clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug painfully into her palms. Tears streamed down her face, yet she smiled at him. “Wade, I’m begging you just this once. Help me save Ari, and I’ll… agree to call off our engagement.”
