The deafening noise all around made Ariel’s heart pound. She watched as a cloud of dust rolled closer and closer in the distance. Danger was almost right in front of them.
She knew everyone was scrambling to evacuate with the equipment.
Her face tightened. “Okay, pack it up now. The equipment can’t be damaged.”
She bent down and snatched her phone off the ground. Its screen had cracked from the fall, but it was still
usable.
Moving with the retreating crowd, she quickly dialed Jayson’s number. The situation here was too dangerous. She had to stop him from coming here.
But…
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is not available…”
The robotic female voice sent a sharp pain through her chest. An indescribable sense of unease swept over.
By the time she reached the vehicle, she stopped and tried again, but the call still couldn’t go through.
Ariel took a deep breath, entered the car, and immediately called Janice instead.
Janice wasn’t with her, and she had no idea what was happening on her end either. She needed to make sure Janice was safe.
Thankfully, Janice answered, though her voice was shaky and broken up by static. “Ari! Where are you? Are you still there? Someone just got me out. I’m fine. What about you?”
The car door slammed shut, and they sped toward the main road. Gunfire echoed in the distance.
Ariel had always known that Croinia was powerful, so its citizens rarely encountered situations like this. But beyond its borders, many places were far from peaceful. Out here, peace was paid for in blood.
She pressed a hand over her ear and raised her voice, shouting to Janice, “I’m fine! I’m heading—‘

Just then, a sudden explosion rocked the car. The driver swerved hard, and Ariel’s phone flew out of her hand.
The call was cut off, and even the signal was barely holding.
Ariel’s face paled instantly. She scrambled for her phone.
Now that she was sure Janice had been safely evacuated, she had to find a way to contact Jayson.
But when she picked up her phone, she saw the screen had gone completely black. After being dropped twice, her phone was totally dead.
Cold sweat formed on her temple. Forcing herself to calm down, she turned to the local man escorting her and asked in fluent Merinian, “Can I borrow your phone, please?”
He was part of the local partner unit and was easy to talk to. He handed Ariel his not–so–smart phone without

hesitation.
Ariel had been smart and sharp all her life, with an almost photographic memory, so Jayson’s number was etched in her mind.
She dialed it smoothly.
Alas, the signal here was jammed. She couldn’t get through at all.
She forced herself to stay composed and turned her eyes to the dust–filled horizon outside the window.
After nearly 20 minutes of speeding along, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes.
When Ariel looked ahead, her expression grew serious once again.
After getting off the plane, Jayson immediately took a car to the restricted area.
This time, he had come fully prepared. The situation here was far more volatile than in Croinia, so Arthur had arranged for a special security team before takeoff.
Jayson was escorted in a private vehicle by the dedicated team. The journey would take about an hour.
Thinking he should let Ariel know he had arrived, he turned on his phone and saw a missed call from her not long ago. He immediately called back.
