Chapter 86
“What are you doing? Your mother can still hear you, you know!” Bonnie shot her son a look of pure annoyance.
If he wasn’t her only child, she would’ve tossed him out without a second thought.
“Drop it, Mom. I’ll apologize. We don’t need any compensation.” Jasper finally grabbed his mom and pulled her off to the side, lowering his voice.
But Bonnie wasn’t having it. Her voice got even louder. “What is that supposed to mean p>
“Jasper, are you out of your mind, or did you actually fall for that girl p>
There was no way she’d let her son marry someone with no background. And Claire, with her fiery temper, was even less of an option. Bonnie couldn’t even trust her son to have a fling with a girl like that without worrying.
“Mom, please, just calm down. She knows Jasper leaned in and whispered in her
ear.
Bonnie’s face changed instantly. “How could she possibly know p>
“I don’t know either.” Jasper looked just as confused.
For a second, Bonnie felt trapped. She knew she couldn’t just mess with Claire so easily anymore. If Claire really knew about that thing… not only did Bonnie have to back off, she’d probably have to treat her nicely, too.
So, just like that, Bonnie turned and put on the biggest smile anyone had ever seen.
She might be terrifying when she was angry, but when she smiled, she looked like the sweetest lady in the room. That was the thing about businesspeople. They could change their faces in the blink of an eye.
“About earlier “
But before Bonnie could finish her sentence, Claire’s phone started ringing.
“Sorry, I need to take this p>
The number was unfamiliar, but Claire answered anyway.
“Claire, it’s Edison p>
“Edison? What’s going on p>
“I went to get your books, remember? I’ve got them now p>
“I figured you’d probably need them for your afternoon class, so I brought them straight to your school p>
Claire was honestly surprised Edison had pulled it off so fast. A trip to The James Village and back would take at least six or seven hours. He must
have been diving nonstop, not.
wasting a single minute.
“Edison, are you already at the school p>
Right then, the dean spoke up. He figured someone needed to let Claire’s family know about the fight, so he said, “Claire, is Edison your guardian p>
“If your guardian’s here, have him come in. We should really handle this with a parent present p>
Even as he said it, the dean couldn’t help feeling nervous. What if Claire’s uncle was some tough guy from the countryside and just started another fight with Jaspers mom? Should they call ‘security?
But Edison had already heard everything on the other end of the line. “What fight? Claire, is someone at school giving you a hard time p>
He immediately thought about everything Claire had gone through. Now that her real identity was out plenty of people would be looking to make her life difficult just because she wasn’t the James family heiress anymore. They might bully her, mock her, and poor Claire would just put up with it, getting hurt and not saying a word.
No way.
He wasn’t letting that happen.
“Claire, don’t worry. I’m coming into the school right now.” Edison raised his voice on purpose, making sure the teacher heard every word.
The dean definitely heard him. Edison’s voice was so strong and clear, it sounded
like he was ready to storm right in and start something.
But at this point, there was no turning back.
He forced a smile at Claire. “Claire, why don’t I just talk to your uncle p>
Claire hadn’t wanted to get Edison involved. But the dean had already stirred things up, so he might as well handle it.
She handed him the phone, and the dean immediately said, “Claire’s guardian? Hello, this is the dean of students at the school p>
