Chapter 137
Claire didn’t have time to think. Stopping wasn’t an option.
“Where are we going?” she asked, picking up speed.
Dane glanced over, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “They might catch up. Are you scared p>
She shot back, “So, what, I’m supposed to leave you on the side of the road because I’m scared p>
He shrugged. “You could if you wanted p>
Claire frowned. “Quit joking. If you were really fine with me ditching you, you wouldn’t have asked for a ride on my scooter p>
Honestly, if things got desperate, he could have just stolen a scooter and taken off on his own. Then again, she remembered, he didn’t even know how to ride one.
Dane, for his part, had no clue what was running through Claire’s head.
All he knew was that the situation was dangerous. If those guys figured out which way he’d gone, they could be on them in no time.
“Just head to your university,” he said. “They won’t dare follow us inside, and they’ll never guess I’m hiding at a school p>
Claire rolled her eyes, but that was exactly what she’d been thinking.
From here, the only real option was to head up the mountain. If they went down, they’d probably run right into the guys chasing them.
She hesitated, then blurted out, “Who are those people? Why do they want to kill you p>
As soon as the words left her mouth, she winced. “Sorry. I shouldn’t ask. Don’t tell me. I really don’t want to know p>
A powerful family like the Greens was bound to have all kinds of secrets. Knowing too much would only get her into trouble.
Dane couldn’t help but find her a little cute in that moment. She was like a cautious little turtle, peeking her head out, only to pull it back at the first sign of danger.
People who valued their lives tended to be careful. He liked that about her.
“Damn it, we’ve been tricked p>
Back where the explosion happened, a bunch of men were sprawled on the ground, all of them banged up to some degree.
After a round of cursing and groaning, they dragged the worst-injured guy back into the car.
“Hurry up and get out of here. The cops are going to show up any second p>
The Solenia police were infamous for being sharp and quick to arrive-almost like they had a sixth sense.
But Dane had gotten away, and now they’d blown their cover. What were they supposed to do next?
The guy in charge, wearing a headset, called someone.
“You idiots! The crash just happened. Even if he’s not hurt, he can’t be far. Didn’t it occur to you to go took for him?” the voice on the other end was furious.
“Boss, we checked. There wasn’t a single car nearby. We sabotaged his brakes. Knowing Dane, it makes sense he’d head this way p>
“But where is he p>
Wait a second. The guy realized something—there’d been a little electric scooter nearby. The kind you scan and ride.
One person would fit, but two? That would be a squeeze.
Could that guy have been Dane?
No matter what, they needed to check it out.
He didn’t tell the boss what he was thinking. He hung up and headed out to search.
Claire was pushing the scooter as
hard as it would go, but the
mountain road was draining the
battery fast. Even with a full charge p>
it was struggling now.
When they finally reached campus, Claire had no intention of bringing Dane inside. Instead, she led him to a nearby internet café.
“Hey, Green!” she called to the guy at the front desk. “Keep an eye out for me, will you? Let me know if any strangers come in p>
Green grinned at her, obviously trying to impress. “Claire! What brings you here today? You here to queue up a five-stack with us p>
Claire was legendary at games. The first time these guys met her, they couldn’t even believe she was the same person who ranked first Sifverpeak International College across the street.
She always wore a mask when she came in, and today was no different.
Everyone called her Claire, and if she was in a good mood, she’d carry them through game after game.
With Claire on the team, winning big was just the beginning.
