Chapter 259
Tiffany shot her daughter a glare. “What did I say wrong? I’m just worried about Melissa p>
“If you’re so worried, do you really have to sound so smug about it?” Yolande didn’t bother sugarcoating her words.
Ophelia almost burst out laughing at how direct Yolande was. She’d always known that Tiffany was jealous of Melissa. But since Tiffany’s family depended on them for everything, Ophelia had never worried she’d actually hurt Melissa. Still, seeing Tiffany act this way toward Melissa’s daughter was another story, and it didn’t sit right with her.
“Yolande’s right,” Ophelia said, her voice calm but pointed. “Tiffany, are you really hoping Melissa spends the rest of her life farming in the countryside p>
She’d planned to give Tiffany some grace for Yolande’s sake, but it turned out some people just liked being called out in front of everyone.
Tiffany looked embarrassed for a moment. “Of course not. I just think Melissa must really love Claire’s dad, if she’s willing to stay out in the country with him instead of coming back to Cabinda. You all have been so good to her, but she ditched her own family for a man. I just don’t get it. Melissa’s so ungrateful p>
Ophelia glanced at her coolly. “Melissa has her reasons. As her family, it’s our job to support her decisions, not judge them p>
Claire felt a wave of relief and satisfaction. She didn’t even have to say a word, and Ophelia was already standing up for her.
She looked at Tiffany with an innocent smile. “Tiffany, maybe you should go to the countryside and try out farm life for yourself p>
Claire didn’t bother denying anything about her parents farming. It was clear Tiffany was just fishing for trouble, and she wasn’t about to make things more complicated.
“Honestly, the countryside is pretty great. All the food is fresh and organic. Even the way we water the crops is all-natural, using real
manure as fertilizer
you can always spot leeches wriggling around in the fields. But don’t worry-if a leech ever latches onto your leg, we know exactly what to do p>
Tiffany’s face turned pale. “No way. I am not going to the countryside!” She interrupted before Claire could finish.
Claire widened her eyes, pretending to be surprised. “Really? I thought you were fascinated by how my parents live p>
Tiffany shook her head quickly. “No, not at all. I’m used to city life. I wouldn’t last a day out there p>
“Oh,” Claire replied, her smile never fading. “I just thought maybe you wanted to visit my parents and spend some time in the country p>
It was impossible to tell if Claire was joking or being serious, and Tiffany didn’t dare risk finding out. She looked Claire over again, noticing her bright eyes and beautiful features that clearly resembled Melissa There was no way Padgett’s family would’ve gotten the wrong person.
And those clothes-definitely not what a country girl could afford. Ophelia or Karla must’ve bought them. Of course Melissa’s daughter was getting spoiled. She already had a new wardrobe.
Well, if Melissa’s daughter got something nice, then her own Yolande deserved the
same.
Tiffany turned to Ophelia and forced a smile. “Claire’s outfit is really cute. It looks expensive, doesn’t it? I was just thinking, Yolande hasn’t had any new clothes in a while. This would be perfect for the holidays. Where did you get it? I’d like to buy the same one for Yolande. And that jade pendant on her neck matches so
well with the outfit p>
Ophelia’s lips pressed together in a frown. “I didn’t buy those clothes. They’re
Claire’s own p>
