“Maybe lieana thinks that, since I managed to marry into the Churchill family, her daughter shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than I did p>
Ophelia had always known that lieana was jealous of her.
“You fell for Caleb all on your own, remember?” her mom sighed over the phone. “It’s not like we set it all up. Back then, we were so worried about you marrying into such a big family. Being the eldest daughter-in-law in a place like that is no easy job p>
“At that time, your father’s position at work wasn’t anything impressive, either p>
“Luckily, Padgett turned out to be a reasonable man. The rest of the in-laws were easy enough to get along with, too p>
“And you were amazing. You married Caleb and gave him twins right away. That was when we really relaxed p>
“There was a time when your dad couldn’t sleep at night. He’d say he had to keep moving up in the world, because if his daughter ran into trouble at her in-laws’, he didn’t want anyone thinking she had nobody to rely on p>
There was no way lieana could have guessed that after Ophelia got married, her dad’s career would take off. It wasn’t just the perks of marrying well. Most of it came from his own hard work.
“Mom, thank you. Thank Dad, too. I was so stubborn about Caleb, but you both supported me anyway p>
And looking back, it was worth it. Caleb truly was the right man to bet on.
But Dane was different.
With Dane, you could tell just by looking. He was coldhearted, no question about it.
Caleb might act tough, but he was all warmth underneath. Dane, on the other hand, would do anything for the girl he loved, but if he wasn’t interested in you, you could beg on your knees and he still wouldn’t care.
Irma had basically thrown herself at him today, and he hadn’t spared her a single glance.
“Just live your own life, sweetheart. Don’t worry about Irma,” Ophelia’s mom reminded her.
After hanging up, Ophelia thought about it for a while. In the end, she decided it was better to bring things up with Padgett herself.
“I’m not sure where lieana heard
about Dane, but she probably found out something about the Churchill family and the Greens She really wanted me to play matchmaker today,” Ophelia explained. “Honestly, I just don’t think Dane and Irma are a good fit p>
Padgett wasn’t clueless. He could tell exactly what lieana and her daughter were angling for.
He was glad, though, that Ophelia knew where to draw the line.
“I understand. Dane’s been good to Claire because she caught his eye. If things don’t work out between them,
nobody’s going to force it. But if they

“Really, though, whatever lieana and Irma are hoping for is pretty unrealistic p>
“It doesn’t matter if she likes him, or if you make the introduction, there’s no guarantee Dane would be interested p>
“Don’t let this get to you, Ophelia. If your family starts giving you a hard time p>
It was obvious what Padgett meant. If Ophelia’s relatives tried to make things difficult for her, he wouldn’t hesitate to go have a little talk with her father himself. “There’s no need. My mom said to just leave lieana alone,” Ophelia promised. “It’s lieana’s idea. My parents don’t support it at all p>
She really didn’t want Padgett to misunderstand. He seemed gentle enough now, but his reputation for handling things in the business world was intimidating.
Her husband always said that Padgett’s methods could make his own look tame.
“Your parents are good people,” Padgett said, finally satisfied.
Meanwhile, over at the Dean house, Ophelia’s mom had no intention of confronting lieaną directly. Instead, she spoke quietly to her son, teffing. him to keep his wife in check and not let her cause trouble at work.
When Percy learned what was going on, he was furious. The Dean family already had the support of the Churchills. Was lieana really trying to get involved with the Greens as well?
