Chapter 1520
[ 623 words ]
There was more than one predator. They prowled around the tents, peering at the fabric.
But they didn’t attack. The moment they caught the scent of the spray lining the perimeter, they recoiled, deeply unsettled by the smell, and kept their distance from the tents.
When the guards on duty finally got a clear look at what was circling them, they nearly screamed.
Bears!
Three massive black bears. At a glance, it looked like a family of three.
The bears sniffed around the tents, peering curiously inside with almost human-like intelligence.
The watch consisted of one man from Silas’s team and one from Miller’s.
The two soldiers exchanged a terrified glance, both seeing the sheer panic in the other’s eyes.
A single swipe from one of those massive paws would snap them in half.
While they were heavily armed, they absolutely could not open fire on wild bears unless it was a matter of life and death.
The two men stayed perfectly still, holding their breath, terrified that the bears would notice them.
If they stayed quiet, the bears might just lose interest and leave.
But if they made a sound, it could trigger an immediate attack.
Playing dead was their best option.
Yet, something was keeping the family of three anchored to the campsite. They showed no signs of leaving.
At that moment, Claire and Dane, who were supposed to be fast asleep, snapped their eyes open.
The noise outside was impossible to ignore.
Inside the cabin, Rory, Jace, Brooks, and River were also wide awake.
The four of them hadn’t dared to sleep deeply, anticipating trouble.
Hearing the heavy footsteps outside, they unanimously sat up, ears straining, shifting into defensive stances.
If anything breached the cabin, all four were ready to throw their lives on the line to protect Claire and Dane.
Simultaneously, Silas and Miller opened their eyes inside their respective tents.
Both men had woken up the second they heard the commotion. Seeing the massive, lumbering shadows cast against the illuminated tent walls, they instantly recognized the predators and froze.

Neither man left their tent, but their minds raced.
Something was intensely attracting the bears to the camp, but Claire’s bug spray was keeping them away from the tents.
Trapped between attraction and repulsion, the animals were getting angry.
The occupants of the tents and the cabin held their ground, but their composure didn’t last long.
The family of three bypassed the
tents entirely and lumbered straight toward the cabint door. One of the bears began ramming its massive head against the wood.
We miscalculated! Claire realized with a jolt.
She had told Silas to spray the perimeter around the tents, but she hadn’t sprayed the cabin.
She had assumed that if the wildlife avoided the tents, they would avoid the entire campsite.
Who could have guessed the bears would weave right past the tents and head straight for the cabin?

With a deafening crash, the door splintered and collapsed inward.
The black bears roared as they stormed into the cabin.
Everyone inside jolted upright, holding their breath in terror.
Claire glanced at the smoldering fire pit, and a horrible realization hit her.
The smell of the smoke was driving the bears insane!
Even if they wanted to run now, it was too late.
Claire frantically patted the medical pouch next to her sleeping bag, feeling for her remaining bug spray.
She had no idea if the scent of the spray could overpower the smell of the smoke!
Everything had been fine earlier. Who the hell had added more wood to the fire in the middle of the night?
Whatever wood they had burned was releasing a scent so pungent it was enraging the bears.
And they had all slept right through it!
