Chapter 1536

He demanded an answer, simply wanting to know who was about to execute him.
He refused to die without knowing the face of his enemy.
Though Officer Miller had managed to evade capture, he was still poisoned. Surrounded by heavily armed experts, his chances of a successful rescue were practically zero.
Escaping The Aila Highlands to call for backup seemed like an impossible dream.
“Who we are is irrelevant. What matters is that if you cooperate with our trials, your deaths might not be quite so agonizing.”
“You’re from Sundara, aren’t you?” The young soldier wasn’t an idiot. The captors weren’t bothering to lower their voices, clearly confident that none of the prisoners would leave the cave alive.
No Solenian faction would dare run illegal human experiments deep in The Aila Highlands.
The region was notoriously lethal, and despite a modern reliance on science, the locals held a deep, almost superstitious reverence for the unforgiving wilderness.
Merely trekking through the area took immense courage; carving out a black-site laboratory was sheer insanity.
The identity of the perpetrators was glaringly obvious.
More importantly, the soldier had just heard the scientist address the tactical leader as ‘Kael.’
It was an unmistakably Sundaran name.
“We are indeed citizens of Sundara. And I find your defiant glare deeply offensive.” Kael sneered at the young soldier and slowly drew his sidearm.
He leveled the barrel directly at the soldier’s eye. He pulled the trigger.
The bullet tore through the damp cave air, hurtling straight toward the young man’s face.
But mid-flight, a deafening crack echoed as another bullet intercepted it perfectly. The impact shattered the projectile, sending fragments flying harmlessly into the rock.
Kael reacted with blinding speed, ducking behind cover before immediately returning fire toward the source of the shot-Officer Miller’s position.
“I knew you hadn’t run like a coward,” Kael laughed, his voice dripping with sadistic glee.
He had been exposed.
Miller instantly realized he had fallen for the bait.
Kael had aimed for the young soldier specifically to flush Miller out of hiding.
“Release my men, and I will surrender myself as your test subject!”
“My biometrics and combat conditioning are far superior to theirs!”
Even while diving for cover under heavy fire, Miller desperately tried to negotiate a trade.
But Kael had absolutely no interest in compromises.
“Why don’t you drop your weapon first, and we can discuss terms after you’re in chains?”
Kael mocked him, firing two more suppressing shots toward Miller’s barricade. The Sundaran operatives began advancing in a tactical formation, boxing Miller in.
If they hadn’t needed live test subjects, they would have simply riddled Miller with bullets the moment he revealed himself.
Securing prime specimens in The Aila Highlands was a logistical nightmare, so they were determined to take him alive.
The brutal standoff dragged on in the suffocating darkness.
Until finally, Claire and the rescue team arrived.

Surprisingly, Zeke hadn’t tried any more tricks on the final stretch, leading them directly to the concealed entrance of the cave.
“Gunfire!”
Silas heard the sharp cracks echoing from the depths and immediately knew things had gone sideways.
Without a second of hesitation, his tactical squad breached the cavern.
The moment Silas saw Miller pinned
down and fighting a desperate,
losing battle against a heavily armed squad, his expression turned murderous.
Miller was being toyed with like a mouse cornered by a pack of wolves.
No matter how exceptional his combat skills were, he couldn’t survive an endless wave of fresh opponents.
His ammunition was completely depleted.
Now, the operatives were taking turns engaging him in brutal hand-to-hand combat to wear him down.
He had held his own initially, but the
injuries were rapidly accumulating

To make matters worse, Kael had proposed a sick game: if Miller survived one
round of combat, he would release one prisoner.
If he survived two rounds, he’d release two.
But Miller hadn’t even made it through the first gauntlet.
Thank God Silas and his team breached when they did.
Kael clearly hadn’t anticipated reinforcements, but with a row of hostages secured
behind him, he remained supremely confident.
“Well, what do we have here? More volunteers for the meat grinder?”
