Chapter 1572
[ 633 words ]
These sudden detours left Reese and the others deeply on edge.
“Did something go wrong on Graves’ end? Why does he keep making us change directions?”
Zachary gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white with frustration.
He had signed up for a quick payday and a fast getaway; driving aimlessly around Montara was fraying his nerves.
Though he had agreed to work for Graves, he was still a Solenian citizen.
If he hadn’t committed a string of crimes, he would never be helping Sundara operatives.
Simply put, he just wanted to escape across the border.
Graves had used that exact desperation to buy his loyalty, making it an offer the man couldn’t refuse.
Reese, on the other hand, was a devoted Sundara spy. She had embedded herself
in the hospital for years to gather high-level intelligence.
Blowing her cover for this extraction felt like a massive sacrifice.
But she had compiled a mountain of intel over the years.
As long as she made it back to Sundara safely, she could retire in luxury.
Reese desperately wanted to go home.
Living as a sleeper agent in the hospital had been a waking nightmare of constant anxiety.
She had been counting the days, surviving on sheer willpower.
Graves had promised to bring her home, and she willingly threw her life on the line for him.
Besides, securing a high-value target like Claire guaranteed she would be hailed as a hero upon her return.
As a trained intelligence officer, Reese had sharp instincts.
She casually flipped down the sun visor, using the mirror to scan the road behind them, and instantly spotted the tail.
“We’re following Graves’ orders, but I think he’s just using us to buy time for his own escape,” Reese muttered, her suspicions confirmed.
Hearing that, Zachary snapped.
“Then what the hell are we doing? Let’s dump the girl and make a run for it!”
You couldn’t blame the guy for wanting to save his own skin; his loyalty to this spy ring was nonexistent.
If he failed to escape today, he could always lay low and wait for another
opportunity.
But if the cops caught him, his

Reese instantly knew he was about to flip.
She drew a gleaming scalpel and pressed the razor-sharp edge hard against Zachary’s ribs.
“Don’t even think about it. We do exactly what Graves tells us to do!”
“You people are insane!”
Zachary scoffed, glaring at the blade.
“If he told you to fall on your sword, would you do it?” he challenged, his voice dripping with defiance.
He wanted out.
No amount of money was worth spending the rest of his life in a cage!
Reese wanted nothing more than to slit his throat, but they desperately needed a driver.
“Shut up and drive. If you want to die, I’ll happily oblige!”
Zachary sneered, calling her bluff. “Do it! Kill me right now and see how fast the cops pull us over!”
“Good luck navigating the Montara borders without me.”
Zachary was driven by two things: getting to Sundara and getting paid.
He had deep connections with local smugglers, and the spies needed his exact route to slip out of the country.
They were entirely dependent on each other to survive.
But if Graves was just using them as bait to distract the police, how were they supposed to make it out alive?
Reese hadn’t expected him to call her bluff so aggressively.
She let out a chilling laugh. “I don’t care if

“So, you don’t need to worry about him leaving us behind.”
“Stick to his route.”
“He’s the mastermind of the Daybreak Syndicate. No one is smarter than him!”
How else could Graves have escaped the clutches of the national security forces?
Reese’s faith in Graves bordered on sheer fanaticism.
