Chapter 1578
[ 666 words ]
The second boat bobbed silently in the dark water, nearly invisible if Graves hadn’t provided the exact coordinates to find it.
“Get your asses moving! What the hell are you waiting for?”
“If you don’t move now, do you want to wait for those bastard cops to put a bullet in your head?” Graves’s voice crackled over the comms, dripping with lethal urgency.
Reese vaulted over the barrier with terrifying agility. For a woman her size, she hauled Zeke forward at a blistering pace.
Zachary trailed behind, weighed down by Claire. The thought of just dumping the girl and making a run for the tree line was overwhelmingly tempting.
But reality crashed down on him the second he saw the heavily armed men on the idling boat aiming suppressed rifles right at his chest.
If he twitched the wrong way, they would blow his head clean off.
Zachary cursed violently under his breath, realizing with sickening clarity that the Syndicate had never intended to let him walk away freely.
He had no idea if Graves was even on that boat, but he knew he was officially a hostage on a floating death trap.
Zachary awkwardly lowered Claire onto the deck.
He desperately wanted to toss her into the deep water, but Reese’s cold glare promised instant death if he tried.
“Her life is worth more than yours. Don’t do anything stupid!”
“What exactly makes this girl so valuable to Sundara?”
Zachary had zero moral boundaries, but his curiosity was burning.
The girl looked young, stunningly gorgeous, and entirely unremarkable.
Had some high-ranking political elite in Sundara demanded her for his personal collection?
“She’s brilliant,” Reese said, casting a sharp glance his way. “She’s an absolute medical prodigy.”
“Our country deeply values top-tier talent, so we are extending a formal invitation for this genius to visit Sundara.”
“We aren’t going to kill her, so stop panicking.”
Zachary stared blankly.
He wasn’t panicking for her safety. But looking at the girl, all he saw was a sheltered, pampered socialite.
And what did a medical genius have to do with him anyway?
He was a wanted fugitive, not a terminal patient. Claire’s medical skills couldn’t erase his criminal record.
So, her status as a prodigy meant absolutely nothing to his survival.
“So, your country just casually steals top-tier talent from ours, huh?”
“I’m guessing she isn’t the first genius you’ve kidnapped?”
Zachary had just thrown the comment out as a cynical joke, but Reese’s expression instantly turned murderous.
He knew right then he had hit the nail on the head.
“I can help you!” Zachary blurted out, a desperate, brilliant idea flashing through his mind.
Now that he had accidentally
uncovered the Syndicate’s darkest
operations, how could be prevent
them from putting a bullet in the
back of his head?
The answer was simple: assimilate!
If he joined their ranks and proved his worth, they wouldn’t slaughter him, right?
Zachary felt a surge of arrogant pride at his own quick thinking.
“You want to join us?” Reese asked, genuinely taken aback by his sudden shift in loyalty.
She suppressed a scoff. The Daybreak Syndicate wasn’t a charity for discarded trash.
They were bound by suffocating
rules. While they operated in the criminal underworld, they were directly funded and commanded by the Sundara government.
Whenever the politicians needed someone assassinated or a high-value asset extracted without leaving fingerprints, Daybreak got the call.
They were a venomous fang meticulously cultivated by the state, ready to inject lethal poison into anyone they were pointed at.
Because of this, every Daybreak operative was a highly trained, lethal weapon.
Even a deep-cover sleeper agent like her possessed formidable skills.
And masterminds like Graves were multi-million-dollar investments.
What could a petty Solenian thug possibly offer them?
Why the hell would Daybreak ever recruit him?
The sheer contempt radiating from Reese’s eyes was so blindingly. obvious that Zachary instantly. realized he had profoundly overestimated his own worth.
But what the hell?
A man had to dream. What if they actually said yes?
“I know I’m a wanted fugitive right now, but I have a very specific set of skills.”
Zachary desperately tried to pitch his value.
Reese cut him off with a dismissive wave. “Let’s talk about it if we actually survive
the trip back to the motherland.”
