Chapter 1622
[ 580 words ]
She couldn’t shake her anxiety. There was no such thing as a free lunch.
If she took a free laptop, would Claire end up owing Dane a massive favor?
Lex subconsciously looked at Claire.
Claire gave her an encouraging nod. “It’s in the final testing phase, so it shouldn’t have any major bugs.”
“Just take it, Lex.”
Dane added another layer of reassurance. “The only company rule is that you can’t sell it or give it away.”
“If you run into any performance issues, just send feedback to our tech team.”
“I’ll give you a contact number. You’re basically acting as a beta tester for us. Sound fair?”
Dane was only explaining all this to save face for Claire.
He could see the girl was resilient and had potential.
Her current lack of funds meant nothing in the long run.
“Okay, yeah, absolutely! I’ll take detailed notes on how it runs!” Lex agreed eagerly.
If it really was a beta tester model, using it meant she was actually helping Claire and Dane out, right?
Dane probably didn’t care about a single tester’s notes, but at least she felt like she was contributing.
As long as Claire wasn’t just mooching off her boyfriend and losing her dignity, Lex was relieved.
Claire had no idea Lex was overthinking it to this extent.
The rest of the guests hadn’t known it was Lex’s birthday, and considering some of them had crashed the party, they barely knew her.
So no one expected them to bring presents.
Reid Dalton, for instance, was engaged to Zara, so her gift covered them both.
He didn’t feel the need to scramble for something else.
Dane and Claire were a packaged deal too.
Then there was Yanis Mercer. He had shown up solo and wasn’t obligated to give anything.
But seeing everyone else handing over boxes, Yanis felt awkward standing there empty-handed.
He reached into his wallet and pulled out a gift card for his family’s premium supermarket chain.
“Lex, there isn’t a ton loaded on this, so don’t be disappointed,” he said, handing it
over.
“Just take it and grab some snacks on me.”
The card was preloaded with about a hundred and fifty dollars a standard employee perk.
Yanis always carried a stack of them just in case he needed a quick tip or bribe.
It wasn’t a staggering amount, making it somewhat acceptable for Lex.
In reality, walking out of his net
high-end grocery store usually at least three hundred buck.
The card’s balance barely covered a decent shopping trip.
“This…” Lex hesitated. She barely knew Yanis.
She had zero desire to accept anything from him.
She knew he was only offering it because of his friendship with Zara.
That meant she absolutely shouldn’t push her luck and take it.
Yanis laughed, clearly exaspit o won’t a

“No, I don’t…” Lex stammered, instantly panicking.
She was no match for a seasoned rich kid, so Zara smoothly stepped in to save her.
“Just take it, Lex! We’ll hit the store together and blow the whole balance on junk food!”
Hearing that made it sound much more like a fun group activity.
Lex finally nodded and accepted the card.
Yanis let out a quiet breath of relief It was first time the young heir had ever struggled to give away. money. Gontent
This was exactly why he hated socializing outside his tax bracket.
It wasn’t arrogance; their fundamental views on the world simply clashed.
Dealing with someone as hyper-sensitive as Lex was exhausting.
Thank god Lex was Zara’s roommate and not his.
Otherwise, he would have moved out of the dorms on day one.
Nobody liked having to walk on eggshells every time they opened their mouth.
