Chapter 1640

Even when they did drink, getting drunk was out of the question. You never knew when a medical emergency might arise.
A surgeon’s hands could never shake, and alcohol was the fastest way to ruin manual dexterity.
“I’ll just have a taste.”
Dr. Terrance was a reasonable man.
He poured himself a thimbleful of the red wine and another of the osmanthus brew.
Barry rarely drank either, so he followed suit, taking only tiny, polite sips.
The glasses were small, holding barely two swallows each. It truly was just a tasting.
Claire poured a splash for herself, enjoying the lively, warm atmosphere of the table. She was mid-bite when her phone buzzed with a text from Dane.
“You’re at Abe’s Rotisserie?”
Claire blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected to get caught having dinner.
She quickly typed back, “I wasn’t trying to leave you out! I came with Barry and the other doctors from the conference.”
“I know, it’s fine. I just ordered a plate of your favorite dessert for your table.”
A few minutes later, a waiter arrived carrying a delicate plate of Glazed Peach Petals.
The peach blossoms were perfectly in season, and Abe’s execution of the dessert was not only visually stunning but profoundly delicious.
It was light, with just the perfect hint of sweetness, an ideal palate cleanser.
“Did Abe send this up too?” Dr. Terrance’s eyes lit up the moment the exquisite pastries hit the table.
“We definitely didn’t order this. Is this another gift from him?”
The waiter looked directly at the only young woman in the room. “Mr. Green ordered this specifically for Ms. Claire.”
Mr. Green?
Dr. Terrance looked completely lost.
“A friend of mine sent it over. Please, dig in, Dr. Terrance.”
Claire took one for herself. It was incredible, leaving a fragrant, lingering sweetness on her tongue.
“Peach blossoms are usually a bit too delicate for my taste, but I’ll give it a shot, Dr. Terrance muttered playing the gruff older man before immediately devouring three of them in rapid succession.
“So, who is this Mr. Green? Is he trying to court our Claire?” Dr. Terrance asked, happily chewing on the free dessert.
Barry shot him a look. “Mr. Green is Claire’s fiancé. Just eat your food.”
He then turned to Claire. “Is Mr. Green in the restaurant? Do you want to invite him over to join us?”
“Or did he want you to go join his table?”
Barry deeply respected Claire’s autonomy.
They were young and in love; wanting to spend time together was perfectly natural.
He just hadn’t expected them to crash into each other during a work dinner. Was this Mr. Green keeping tabs on her?
“No, he’s not here. A friend of his is eating here and must have spotted me coming in And then immediately snitched to Dane, obviously.
Whatever the case, she was going to finish her dinner first.
By the time they cleared their plates, Dane still hadn’t shown up. He was exactly where he said he was.
However, Abe finally managed to slip out of the kitchen, bursting into their private room with a brand-new dish.
“Spicy duck tongues. It’s a new recipe I’ve been playing with. We’ve never had this on the menu before.”
“Tell me what you think of the seasoning.”
Abe was being incredibly modest.
The dish was flawlessly
executed spicy, numbing, and so fragrantit made everyone’s mouths water all over again. The taste was phenomenal.
“This is top-tier bar food. Who talked you into making this?”
Dr. Terrance had an excellent palate. He was actively sweating from the spice,
hissing softly, but he refused to put his silverware down.
“My dad’s drinking buddies.” Abe sighed heavily. He wasn’t even fifty yet,
significantly younger than Dr. Terrance.
But his hair was already completely white, a testament to the crushing weight his father had placed on his shoulders.
Keeping the restaurant’s legacy alive was no easy feat. The place printed money, but that kind of success bred intense jealousy.
Countless powerful figures demanded tables here.
Abe couldn’t just close the doors and take a day off even if he wanted to.
If he tried, his phones would literally ring off the hook.
