Chapter 1859
[ 597 words ]
“Come home. What if Uncle Winthrop is actually there?” “You don’t have morning classes tomorrow, right?”
Honoria tried to persuade her, but Valerie refused flat out.
Unable to sway her, Honoria’s expression darkened slightly.
Valerie caught the shift in her mood and felt a strange twist in her gut.
“You’re not mad that I’m not going home, are you?”
When Honoria looked up again, her gentle smile was perfectly back in place. “Of course not. I’m just worried my uncle will be disappointed if he goes home and you aren’t there.”
Valerie brushed it off. “He won’t be. My dad is used to me not being home, just like I’m used to him not being there.”
How was Honoria supposed to respond to that?
“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me? He’d definitely be thrilled to see you.”
Valerie answered with brutal honesty, “No, he wouldn’t. His eyes are only on his work. He probably wouldn’t even notice me.”
After arguing in circles to no avail, Valerie was the first to lose patience.
“Look, Claire needs to get home to study, and I need to get back to study too.”
Left with no other options, Honoria finally said her goodbyes.
Once they were separated, Claire drove while asking Valerie, “Weren’t you planning to study at home earlier?”
When Claire had gone to grab her study materials, Valerie had gone to her dorm to do the same.
Yet just now, she told her cousin she was heading back to campus.
“Yeah, I was hoping to trouble you for a ride home, or I can just hop out and catch a cab.”
Valerie explained, “I just really didn’t want her driving me.”
She didn’t elaborate on the reason, but Claire got the distinct impression that Valerie didn’t like her cousin very much.
Claire didn’t press the issue. She asked for Valerie’s address, intending to drop her off first.
“It’s fine, dropping you off is no trouble at all.”
But about ten minutes into the drive, Claire sensed something was wrong.
She told Valerie to sit tight and grab the handle.
“What’s wrong, Claire?”
Valerie had been dozing off, but Claire’s sudden acceleration and sharp warning instantly jolted her awake.
“We have a tail.”
Claire had spotted them. Through her earpiece, Jace James and Rory James, who were tailing her from a distance, heard her as well.
They had already noticed the suspicious car ahead of them, and Claire’s warning put them on high alert.
“What? Why would anyone follow us?”
Valerie’s body instinctively braced itself following Claire’s command.
But her mind was still catching up.
She couldn’t fathom why anyone would be trailing their car.
“I’m not entirely sure…”
Claire glanced at the GPS and knew they were in trouble.
Ahead was a notoriously complex stretch of road where accidents were incredibly
common.
Was the car behind just following them?
No, someone inside was
coordinating via radio. Once they et
realized Claire wasn’t taking the route back to campus, they had adjusted, their plan on the fly.
But Claire wasn’t one to sit back and be a victim. She quickly steadied her breathing.
The upcoming merge was a hotspot for crashes due to heavy traffic, but Claire was moving at breakneck speed.
Just as the trailing car gunned its engine, recklessly surging forward to
close the gap, Claire aggressive get
yanked the steering wheel.
She had already assessed the road The adjacent lane was a blind spot, but the moment she swerved into it,
the
cars behind her accelerated too
Claire had no choice but to floor it. But by a stroke of terrible luck, there was an intersecting road right ahead.
A massive truck was barreling through.
Claire was going too fast to brake, and so was the truck.
Her only option was to make a desperate gamble and steer directly toward the
guardrail!
