Chapter 1865
[ 549 words ]
“Did they run the scans?”
The raw terror in Dane’s eyes hadn’t faded in the slightest.
Footage of the accident was already blanketing social media and news outlets. The carnage was apocalyptic.
The second Dane heard about the crash, his mind had practically short-circuited.
He couldn’t even stomach the thought of what would have happened if Claire had been in that black sedan.
Thank God she swerved.
“They ran everything. I’m completely fine. If you don’t believe me, do you want to run the checks yourself?”
Claire raised her arms playfully.
Dane’s gaze darkened. “Are you sure about that?”
Claire suddenly realized how that sounded.
“Uh… maybe not that sure.”
Despite her protests, Dane forced her through a second round of full-body scans. Only after confirming she truly only had a mild concussion did he order her to stay in bed and rest.
To ensure she didn’t try to sneak out, he simply brought his office to the hospital.
He anchored himself in her room, making any escape attempts completely impossible.
And so, a strangely tranquil silence settled over the room: Claire sitting up in bed reading her textbooks, while Dane worked silently on the sofa.
Neither disturbed the other, existing in perfect, bizarre harmony.
Next door, after checking on his daughter, Mr. Winthrop came over with a gift basket for Claire.
He knocked and walked into this exact scene.
Mr. Winthrop recognized Dane, so seeing him in Claire’s room didn’t shock him.
He had run a background check on Claire and knew Dane was her fiancé.
“Mr. Winthrop.”
Claire immediately moved to get out of bed.
Mr. Winthrop stopped her. “Don’t get up, just stay right there.”
“I told you before, ‘Uncle Winthrop’ is fine.”
Claire smoothly adjusted. “Uncle Winthrop, were you checking in on Valerie?”
She felt guilty for dragging Valerie into this mess.
It was clear she needed to stop hanging out with friends for a while.
Otherwise, she’d just end up getting them killed.
“I’m so sorry, I had no idea something like this would happen.”
Claire was convinced the hit was for her, so her apology was direct.
But Mr. Winthrop firmly believed the hit was for him.
So he had come to apologize to Claire.
“This wasn’t your fault. If anything, I’m here to thank you for saving Valerie’s life.”
“I saw the traffic footage. If you
hadn’t pulled off that impossible maneuver, Iwouldn’t have a

“Claire, I can’t express how grateful I am. Valerie means everything to me!”
“The people who did this probably knew that, which is why they went after her.”
“You were caught in the crossfire because of us!”
“I am incredibly sorry-“
Mr. Winthrop spoke with raw, desperate sincerity.
He had been inches away from losing his daughter forever.
Seeing the footage made him realize just how apocalyptic the situation was, and how terrifyingly composed this young woman had been under fire. , FindNovel.net

Claire looked thoroughly bewildered.
Who am I?
Where am I?
What on earth is Uncle Winthrop talking about?
However, Claire was quick on the uptake and soon pieced together his logic.
“Are you saying you think the crash was an assassination attempt on Valerie?”
That was exactly what Mr. Winthrop believed.
He had crossed some dangerous people recently, and they had previously threatened his daughter.
But being a man of ironclad principles, he had refused to yield and instead hit them even harder.
He suspected this was their brutal retaliation.
If Valerie hadn’t survived, it truly would have destroyed him.
