Chapter 1173
He was just incredibly cold. No one had ever seen him smile.
He rarely spoke, either.
Katy had met him five or six times, and their entire interaction consisted solely of eye contact.
Not even a nod.
After Sage Joyner picked Katy up, they headed toward the hotel.
Katy and Jett sat in the backseat, each hugging their respective doors.
It felt as if a vast ocean separated them.
Sage had spent his early years roughing it on the streets; he had absolutely zero experience dealing with children.
So the car was dead silent, the kind of quiet that made your eyelids heavy.
The heat was blasting, filling the air with a drowsy, suffocating warmth.
Katy’s head bobbed up and down like a little bird caught in the wind until, completely unconsciously, she slumped over and rested her forehead against Jett’s shoulder.
The line of Jett’s jaw tightened instantly.
He didn’t move, nor did he look down at her. Only the fingers resting on his knees twitched slightly.
In the driver’s seat, Sage glanced in the rearview mirror and his eyelid gave a violent twitch.
The scene was utterly bizarre.
Since bringing Jett home, he had realized his son was as cold as ice and as quiet as
a mute. Usually, he’d scowl if someone merely brushed against him.
But now, he sat rigid, letting Katy sleep against him without an ounce of defensiveness.
That stubborn, awkward tension clashed with the freezing aura radiating from him, creating a strange, inexplicable harmony.
And wait-didn’t Katy suffer from severe insomnia?
She usually needed heavy medication to sleep, yet here she was, completely relaxed, out cold on Jett’s shoulder.
As Sage puzzled over this, Jett looked up, their eyes meeting in the mirror.
Jett’s gaze was freezing.
Even Sage, a hardened veteran who had seen his fair share of blood and violence, felt a chill run down his spine.
He quietly averted his eyes and focused on the road.
When they arrived at the hotel, Sage turned to wake them up.
But Jett spoke first. “Let her sleep a bit longer.”
Sage hesitated, then agreed.
They waited for over three hours.
When Katy finally woke up, she was still groggy, blinking in confusion.
The moment she realized she was leaning on Jett, she bolted upright.
She turned to stare at him, absolute disbelief written all over her face.
She had actually fallen asleep?
How was that possible?!
Was she just exhausted?
But she had only been separated from Noreen for a little over thirty
hour
Staying awake for thirty Hours
usually meant nothing to her.
After all, she held a personal record of seven straight days without a wink of sleep.
Katy was overwhelmed and conflicted.
Jett, on the other hand, didn’t spare
her a single glance. His expression and eyes remained completely detached
There was even a tiny wet patch on the shoulder of his jacket where Katy had drooled.
As soon as Katy was awake, he simply opened the door and got out.
The heavy thud of the car door
Que
snapping shut jolted Katy back reality, filling her with intense embarrassment.
She had ruined his clothes. Did she need to wash them or buy him a new one?
She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t notice Jett rubbing his stiff shoulder once he was outside.
As soon as Katy got to her hotel room, she texted Jordan about what had happened
in the car.
Jordan was just as astonished. “How did it feel when you were leaning against him?”
Katy couldn’t quite find the words.
She just thought it was a freak accident.
“Why don’t you try it again?” Jordan suggested.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea…” Katy hesitated.
Mostly because Jett terrified her. He was just too intimidating.
