Chapter 1512
[ 619 words ]
If anything happened to these city folks in the mountains, a normal rescue team wouldn’t stand a chance of getting them out.
Commander Miller, on the other hand, had participated in two separate search-and- rescue ops in The Aila Highlands and knew the terrain better than most.
“You can’t go.” Silas knew his friend’s physical limits. The mountains were bitterly cold and damp. In this season, Miller’s body wouldn’t hold up.
If something went wrong, they’d be entirely cut off-there wasn’t even a cell signal out there!
“What do you mean I can’t? Are you looking down on me, Hawk? I could march into a warzone right now and still rack up a body count!”
Neither man was willing to back down, so they decided to settle it with a fistfight.
Claire stood off to the side, watching them with a deadpan expression. “Feel free to fight, but please pick a winner quickly.”
Both men’s mouths twitched. Who expected this girl to randomly interject with something like that?
“You little brat…” Miller started, but before he could finish, Silas swept his leg out.
For the first three minutes, the match was dead even. But as time wore on, it became glaringly obvious that Miller was outmatched.
Specifically, his old injuries were catching up to him, draining his stamina.
Silas, however, was in peak physical condition.
He had sustained his fair share of injuries too, but the advanced medical care in Cabinda was leaps and bounds ahead of what was available in Montara.
“I actually agree that Commander Miller shouldn’t come with us.”
Once the fight was clearly decided, Claire finally chimed in.
Miller opened his mouth to snap at her, but realizing she was just a delicate young girl, he swallowed his anger.
She wasn’t much older than his own daughter.
If he yelled at her and made her cry, how was he supposed to fix it?
“What was your name again? Look, I’m the local authority around here. If you go in without me, you might find a way in, but you’ll never find a way out!”
“Claire,” she introduced herself politely before explaining. “It’s not that we doubt your abilities, Commander. It’s your health. You’re suffering from a multitude of chronic, deep-seated ailments.”
“The heavy moisture and biting cold in those mountains will do severe damage to your body.”
While the highlands might hide rare medicinal herbs, Commander Miller’s health was far more important.
Miller had no idea how she had deduced all that just by looking at him.
“You’re a doctor?”
“Old friend, weren’t you listening earlier? She’s the doctor who can cure the Dreamweed toxin, Silas quickly interjected, desperate to prevent a misunderstanding.
He had his own ulterior motives. He hoped once Claire cured
men she might be willing to his ne
Miller’s chronic injuries too
The man was in desperate need of rehabilitation, though Silas didn’t know if he could be convinced to transfer to a less demanding military district.

Montara’s climate seemed ideal for recovery, but Miller was far too stubborn to actually rest while stationed here.
He was a workaholic who never gave himself a break.
“Are you sure a doctor this young is reliable?”
Miller’s mouth moved faster than his brain.
The blunt thought slipped out before he could stop it.
Claire heard him perfectly.
She just stared at him with a pleasant, unwavering smile.
He scratched his head, looking distinctly embarrassed. “Uh, I’m not doubting your
skills, but you really are incredibly young.”
“It’s alright. I know I’m a genius,” Claire replied with an understanding nod.
Miller was a rough-around-the-edges soldier, nothing like the highly educated, polished men Silas usually ran with.
He completely missed the underlying humor in her response.
“She means she appreciates the compliment,” Silas explained with a laugh.
Miller was speechless. He was completely out of his depth with these educated city types.
Ultimately, they agreed to enter the mountains together, bringing along a local guide.
