Chapter 1611
[ 579 words ]
“Who is that older man getting out of the car? He kind of looks like Ethan.”
“And there’s a younger guy with them too. They all look really familiar with each other.”
Tabitha and Lily chattered back and forth, successfully making Macy increasingly
anxious.
She had brought them along for backup, not to stress herself out.
Now, it felt like she had shot herself in the foot.
“Are they meeting the parents?” Tabitha, the resident loudmouth, gasped in shock.
Macy immediately shut it down. “Impossible. Doesn’t Claire have a fiancé?”
Even though Macy constantly felt like Claire was stringing Ethan along, she aggressively hoped they wouldn’t end up together.
Ethan was such a great guy-how could he be fooled by someone like Claire?
Was it just because she was pretty?
Macy was pretty too!
People were funny like that. They rarely believed they were inferior to others.
They always looked for flaws in everyone else, never pausing to reflect on themselves.
“Oh, right. Claire is engaged. I heard she and her fiancé are from the same city. Maybe Claire just knows Ethan’s family from back home.”
“That would explain why Ethan is always so nice to her.”
Macy’s eyes lit up. “Exactly! It’s probably just a family connection.”
“Ethan is a gentleman. It’s completely normal for him to look out for a girl if his parents asked him to.”
Lily couldn’t help but roll her eyes privately.
From what she knew about men, no guy was that obedient when it came to ‘looking out for a girl.’
Unless, of course, he actually had feelings for her.
“There’s another guy with them, so it’s definitely not a meet-the-parents situation. Just a casual lunch. Wonder where they’re going,” Macy muttered, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Where else? There are only a few good spots near campus. Why don’t we follow them and see?” Lily suggested, her eyes gleaming with mischief.
“Though it’ll cost you, Macy.”
“Tabitha and I are seriously broke this close to the end of the month.”
Lily just wanted a free, high-end meal, and Macy knew exactly what she was doing.
But if she didn’t follow them to see what was going on, it would eat her alive.
Macy agreed without missing a beat. “Sure. Let’s try that restaurant everyone’s been raving about.”
She phrased it like a casual suggestion, but they were blatantly stalking them. Once inside the same restaurant, Macy noticed that Claire and Ethan barely spoke to each other during the meal.
Instead, Ethan was deep in
conversation with the younger man, while Claire occasionally chatted. with the older man who resembled
Ethan. e

This observation brought Macy immense relief.
Seeing the group finish up and head for the door, Macy hurriedly paid her tab.
“Let’s go say hi to Ethan. That man looks just like your grandfather, so he’s definitely an elder.”
Macy made the suggestion, and neither of her friends called her out on the glaring lie.
It was painfully obvious Macy just wanted an excuse to ‘accidentally’ bump into Ethan.
“Ethan! What a coincidence! Did you guys eat here too?”
Her tactic was entirely unoriginal.
In fact, Claire had noticed them staring from their table ages ago.
The girls’ attempts at covert spying had been laughably obvious.
But they were clearly feeling confident, thinking they had gone completely unnoticed.
In reality, everyone at Claire’s table
was
edibly sharp. They had likely
spotted the three girls spying from
the very beginning
However, for people in their line of work, being observed was normal, so no one had
cared enough to bring it up.
Unless the staring was malicious, it didn’t affect them.
Of course, not everyone ignored it completely-Lawler had briefly
wondered if their bone canco net
breakthrough had attracted the attention of dangerous criminals.
