Chapter 1657

“I understand. You accidentally found out that I know Dewitt.”
Claire was straight to the point.
“Exactly! If it’s too much trouble, please just forget I asked.”
He was here to ask for a business partnership, not make enemies, so he made sure
to keep his tone respectful and soft.
“It’s no trouble at all. Give me a second.”
Dewitt hadn’t been in touch recently, and she had no idea what he was up to.
“Dewitt,” Claire said as the call was picked up almost instantly.
“Claire, is everything okay? Why are you calling right now?”
Dewitt was currently in Montara.
Stephen James was tracing some sleeper agents left behind by The Daybreak Syndicate near the border, and Dewitt had tagged along as his assistant.
In certain areas, Stephen’s official background made investigations difficult, but Dewitt’s cover was perfect.
The locals wouldn’t hide information from a wealthy businessman looking to throw cash around.
“Dewitt, I have a friend who heard you run mining operations over in Kaston. He wants to talk business with you.”
“Your friend?” Dewitt was genuinely surprised.
Claire’s usual circle of friends shouldn’t have the kind of connections to know his true profession.
Unless Claire had explicitly told them.
But he knew her well enough to know she wouldn’t just volunteer that information.
“Yeah, he’s a friend of Dane’s.” Claire didn’t hide the truth.
Dane chuckled to himself. She was incredibly quick to pass the buck when she needed to.
“Sure. I’m in Montara right now, but I’ll be heading back to Cabinda in a couple of days.”
“Get his contact info, and I’ll reach out to him then.”
“Or, if he’s right there with you, put him on the phone and I’ll have a quick chat with him now.”
Dewitt wasn’t going to turn this down.
This was an excellent opportunity.
Showing his face and his influence would ensure no one ever dared to look down on the girl from his family.
Especially not in front of Dane’s friends!
This was entirely different from the protection the Churchill family provided her.
He wanted everyone to know that
the daughters of the James famity didn’t just rely on outside
backing they had their own formidable family standing behind them!

Claire had no idea what Dewitt and Logan discussed.
But when Logan handed the phone back to her, he looked absolutely ecstatic.
That was all that mattered.
One problem solved.
Claire glanced over at Dane.
Dane immediately understood. “We should head out. It’s getting late, and Claire has classes tomorrow.”
Logan naturally didn’t try to force them to stay.
However, before they left, he had an assistant package a gift for Claire.
She wanted to decline, but Dane gently told her to accept it.
It wasn’t until she was sitting in the car that Claire opened the box to see what was inside.
“It’s a bracelet.”
It was composed of soft pink stones that perfectly complemented her pale wrists. It was beautiful.
“What do you think?” Claire shook her wrist slightly, letting it catch the light.
Dane gently caught her wrist in his hand. “It’s stunning. You should wear it.”

Even though it was a gift from another man, it wasn’t overly extravagant, and since Claire clearly liked it, he didn’t mind her keeping it on.
Claire decided not to take it off. After Dane dropped her off at home, she washed up and went straight to bed.
Next door, Jace and Rory saw the lights go out in her apartment and finally headed to sleep themselves.
Claire woke up early the next morning, skipped her regular university classes, and headed straight to the affiliated hospital.
It was Dr. Terrance’s turn to give a lecture, and Claire found the material fascinating.
Lawler had sharp eyes and immediately noticed the new bracelet on her wrist. “That’s a nice bracelet you have on today.” Lawler actually offered a compliment.
Claire gave him a surprised look. “Since when do you care about jewelry?”
The sun certainly hadn’t risen in the west today!
These doctors were usually
obsessed with nothing but medicine. When did they ever have the time or have timeer
interest to admire young women’s
accessories?
Claire lifted her wrist, admiring it herself for a moment. “It is pretty, otherwise I wouldn’t be wearing it.”
“Where did you buy it?” Lawler’s question was even more out of character.
