Chapter 1656
[ 617 words ]
Every pastry on the tiered stand looked like a work of art.
“You two look like you’re just here for afternoon tea.”
Logan had been running around all night and was absolutely exhausted.
Claire observed him quietly. This guy was incredibly ambitious. It made sense why
he had rushed over the moment he discovered her connection to Dewitt.
“Sit down and have something to eat. You look dead on your feet,” Dane said bluntly.
Logan nodded. He hadn’t eaten a single thing all night, surviving only on a few sips of water.
Caleb had already brought a plate of food over.
Coffee was a lifesaver right now.
And these pastries-while grown men usually didn’t have much of a sweet tooth, they were perfectly fine when you desperately needed calories.
Besides, Logan didn’t even know which bakery had supplied the dessert spread, but the taste was surprisingly good.
He had asked Caleb about it in passing, not expecting Caleb to actually pay attention to the details. After Caleb explained, Logan finally turned his attention to Claire.
“What do you think of everything, Claire?”
“Are you asking about the jewelry show or the desserts?” Claire countered.
Logan glanced at Dane. He wasn’t sure if Dane had already briefed Claire on his true motives.
“Both, I suppose.”
Claire took a small bite of a pink cherry blossom mousse.
“The food is genuinely fantastic.”
“And the jewelry is stunning.”
Claire’s praise was sincere.
Logan, however, offered a bitter smile. “I poured everything I had into this event, showcasing the absolute best our company has to offer.”
“But our raw material procurement has been a nightmare lately. High-end jade and gemstones are incredibly scarce right now.”
“I just took over the company, and I refuse to throw in the towel this easily.”
“Finding a reliable supplier for premium raw materials is nearly impossible right now.”
Over-mining had severely depleted the supply of top-tier goods in recent years. Those flawless jade pieces were facing a massive shortage.
To make matters worse, his family’s company had been backstabbed by their previous suppliers.
That was the exact reason Logan was so desperate to secure a new pipeline.
Finding out that Claire’s cousin was in the mining business was a massive stroke of luck.
Whether it worked out or not, he had to try.
He couldn’t afford to let his mother’s side of the family watch him fail.
Taking over this branch of the family business was only possible because his grandparents and his mother had fought tooth and nail against the rest of the family.
Even though his mother was an only child, his grandfather’s brothers had plenty of sons.
Under those circumstances, it had been hard enough for his mother to inherit the business, let alone pass it down to him.
The relatives on that side of the family had thrown countless obstacles in his mother’s way.
If the
subsyes family hadn’t provided
substantial backing, those relatives might have literally orchestrated his
mother’s death to seize control.
His grandfather’s brothers were ruthless.
While the entire family was wealthy, his grandfather’s branch was the most successful.
How could the other brothers not be green with envy?
“I happened to see you walking with a gentleman named Dewitt, Claire.”
“I don’t know what your relationship is, but I was wondering if you could possibly introduce us.”
Most people didn’t know what Dewitt actually did, but in the jewelry industry, ‘Boss Dewitt’ was a legendary name.
Logan hadn’t expected to find a light at the end of the tunnel tonight.
This jewelry show was supposed to be a desperate last stand to attract a reliable supplier.
But since those relatives were
already conspiring to ruin him and turn him into a laughingstock, he figured it was better to bypass their established networks entirely and go straight for the top.
“I absolutely do not want to pry into your personal life. It’s just that I’m…” Logan laid his desperation out on the table.
