Chapter 1655
[ 647 words ]
Logan had poured a massive amount of effort into this jewelry show, aiming to fire the opening shot in his campaign to inherit the family’s jewelry empire.
The exhibition hall was packed with wealthy tycoons and socialites, alongside quite a few figures from the entertainment industry.
Many of the young actresses were clinging to men old enough to be their fathers.
These executives were no different from the rest; they clearly had zero interest in managing their waistlines.
After a quick scan of the room, Claire’s gaze naturally drifted back to Dane.
Her fiancé was definitely the most attractive man in the room!
“What are you thinking about?”
Dane asked, noticing her attention had shifted away from the display cases.
Claire paused. “…I was just wondering if you’ll end up getting a beer belly in a few years.”
Dane followed her line of sight and instantly understood. Those older men were definitely an eyesore.
“I won’t,” Dane promised immediately, without a second thought.
Claire clearly disliked that type of physique, so he would make sure he never ended up looking like that.
“Those girls don’t actually like the men themselves, anyway.”
It was about the money.
Both Dane and Claire knew that perfectly well.
Suddenly, Claire said, “Well, that just proves I like you for who you are, not for your bank account.”
It was as if a drop of sweet nectar had just rippled across the calm surface of Dane’s heart.
He stared at her intensely. “You like me?”
Claire had never explicitly said those words before.
Had she really just confessed to him out of the blue?
For Dane, this was an incredibly wonderful surprise.
“Yeah, I do.” Claire could tell exactly what he was focusing on. She squeezed his hand, her tone resolute.
“Have you two found anything you like?”
Right at that moment, Caleb Cole appeared out of nowhere, shattering the romantic atmosphere.
Dane glared at Caleb, his eyes flashing with irritation.
Claire, however, remained completely unfazed.
Caleb finally noticed their tightly intertwined hands. “Oh, did I interrupt something?”
“No,” Dane said through gritted teeth.
Caleb let out a sheepish chuckle. “Well, I was originally planning to buy a gift for Claire.”
“She saved my grandfather’s life, after all. You can’t turn down a gift from me.”
Before Claire could respond, Dane rolled his eyes. “Get lost.”
Claire quickly declined the offer as well. “You really don’t need to get me anything, Caleb.”
“Your family already paid the Consultation Fee, didn’t they?”
Dane nodded in agreement. “If you have something to say, just spit it out. Stop beating around the bush.”
Caleb knew nothing escaped Dane’s notice.
“Alright, you caught me. Logan asked me to come over.”
“Logan wants to give Claire a gift, but he was worried you might get mad.”
In reality, Logan was more
concerned that if Claire liked a piece of jewelry, Dane would ruthlessly. insist on paying for himself
Gifting something to Claire was essentially doing Dane a favor.
Dane frowned. “Tell Logan to come find us himself when the event wraps up and he has some free time.”
“As for the things Claire likes, I’ll buy them for her.” The implication was clear Caleb and Logan didn’t need to worry about it.
Dane always seemed so indifferent to everything, but his possessiveness over his little fiancée was surprisingly intense.
Caleb hadn’t noticed it before, but now he realized Dane was totally whipped.
“Fine, fine. I know you’re loaded. If you want to throw your money around, be my guest.”
Caleb threw his hands up in defeat. “Anyway, I delivered the message. What you do now is up to you.”
“Though I honestly have no idea what Logan is actually after.”
Claire had acquired quite a haul that evening.
True to Caleb’s word, Logan eventually found a moment to approach them.
By then, Claire and Dane were relaxing in a quiet corner of the buffet area by the window.
Claire had a cup of hot coffee in front of her, along with a tiered stand loaded with pastries.
Dane hadn’t been sure what she
preferre
so he had just t
multi tier display and piled it high with different treats.
