Chapter 1664
[ 635 words ]
Now that the dust had settled, Lawler had planned to walk Claire home to make sure she was safe.
When she told him she was staying, he was genuinely confused.
“Yeah, I want to wait and see what happens. What if he ends up needing me again?”
If anyone else had said that, Lawler would have thought they were incredibly arrogant.
But because it was Claire, Lawler just assumed she was being thorough and responsible.
“Should I send the professors back to the hotel and stay here with you?”
“That’s not necessary. Someone else is coming to wait with me.” Claire didn’t want Lawler hanging around a potentially dangerous situation.
Hearing that, Lawler immediately assumed her fiancé, Mr. Green, was on his way.
Since they were clearly deeply in love, there was no reason for him to play third wheel.
“Be careful, alright? The guy took a bullet, which means he’s likely mixed up in some heavy stuff.”
“What if whoever shot him finds out he survived and comes here to finish the job?”
Lawler was just making a logical deduction, but he had no idea his words were about to become a dark prophecy.
Claire hadn’t called Dane; the people waiting with her were actually Jace and Rory. However, she had texted a photo of the gunshot victim to Hillary.
“Hillary, I think this guy is in deep trouble. Before he passed out, he shoved a USB drive into my hand and mumbled something about delivering it, but he blacked out before he could finish the name.”
“I have a feeling whatever is on this drive is extremely sensitive, so I need you to verify his identity.”
Hillary was currently recovering at the 301 Military Hospital. Reading the message, she immediately sensed the severity of the situation.
She quickly opened the image Claire had sent.
The moment she saw the face, all the color drained from Hillary’s cheeks.
“Claire, where exactly is he right now? I’m escalating this immediately. We’re sending a team to secure him!”
“This man is one of our top-tier informants. I can’t give you his real name, but he absolutely cannot die!”
“And that USB drive in your hand is critical intel. It cannot fall into enemy hands!”
She had no idea why the informant would hand something so vital to a civilian like Claire, but since he had, the assassins would definitely be coming for her next!
Hearing Hillary’s tone, Claire immediately understood the gravity of the situation.
She wasn’t about to waste Hillary’s time.
She just wasn’t sure if she should pass the USB drive to someone else for safekeeping.
Like Jace or Rory, for example.
Those two were infinitely more capable in a firefight than she was.
Something that was dangerous in her hands would be completely secure in theirs.
Hillary’s organization moved with
terrifying efficiency. The Special
Security Bureau immediately
contacted the local polic
demanding the patient be
transferred to the 301 Military Hospital.
The police were stunned.
How had the Special Security Bureau identified the victim before the local precinct even had a lead?
The Bureau also issued a strict directive for the police to ensure the doctor’s absolute safety.
Which doctor?
Captain Byron, who was leading the police investigation, was confused.
The officer stationed at the hospital quickly deduced they meant Claire.
He quickly briefed Captain Byron on how Claire had stepped in to perform the emergency surgery.
Captain Byron immediately barked into his radio, “I’m heading there right now. Lock down the area and protect her at all costs.”
“The agents from Special Security are already en route.”
Claire was pacing anxiously in the hallway.
The
hadn’t even woken up
yet any were already arranging a transfer, which proved just be
compromised this hospital was.
If she were the assassin, she would absolutely come back to confirm the kill.
And they would definitely be hunting for whatever the victim had been carrying. Claire texted Jace and Rory, quickly outlining the situation.
“Things are probably going to get ugly soon. Keep a close eye on anyone trying to access this floor.”
