Chapter 1668

[ 634 words ]

She realized that if she didn’t escape right this second, she was dead.

“Dog, are you just going to sit there and watch?!” The Assassin shrieked.

The taxi suddenly gunned its engine, hurtling directly toward them.

It hadn’t been a random cab she hailed off the street; it was a strategically placed getaway vehicle.

Jace and Rory were forced to dive out of the way of the roaring vehicle, giving The Assassin a split-second window.

She scrambled backward, yanked the passenger door open, and threw herself inside.

“Drive!”

Old Dog slammed his foot on the gas, and the car peeled out onto the main road.

Rory and Jace were only tasked with keeping Claire safe. They made no move to chase the fleeing vehicle, but The Assassin never made it out of the city.

In fact, neither of the operatives in that car survived.

A massive freight truck plowed directly into the side of the taxi at an intersection, killing them both instantly.

The local detectives and the Special Security agents were livid when they arrived at the crash site.

With both suspects dead, their only lead had just been obliterated!

The Special Security team on site was led by a man named Agent Grant, acting in Silas’s absence.

He looked slightly older and far more worn down than Silas.

Claire finally met him face-to-face at the local precinct.

Since she had been taken hostage, the police had brought her in to give an official statement.

Agent Grant had been dispatched specifically at Hillary’s request.

“I’m Agent Grant, Deputy Commander of the Special Security Task Force.”

He offered a firm handshake.

Claire nodded to acknowledge him.

“Claire.” She offered a brief introduction in return.

Agent Grant was staring at her as if she were a mythological creature.

“Do you know me, Agent Grant?”

Why else would he be looking at her like that?

He finally snapped out of it. “I do. I heard you and Dr. Walton pulled Hillary back from the brink of death.”

If he hadn’t been swamped with field operations, he would have visited the hospital himself to see what this legendary young doctor looked like.

Seeing her now, he still found it hard to believe.

No wonder the intelligence networks in Sundara wanted to abduct her. Someone who could literally cheat death was an invaluable asset.

“Are you that curious about me?”

“I’m really not that impressive, Agent Grant. I suggest you rein in your curiosity.”

After all, the only way he would ever witness her medical skills firsthand was if he was bleeding out on a gurney.

“You’re a tough kid. I heard you were the one who spotted the killer in the disguise?” Agent Grant effortlessly shifted into a more complimentary tone.

Claire didn’t think spotting tal net

nurse was some monumental

achievement especially since the

won

man and her accomplice were now corpses in a morgue.

“Were they silenced?”

Claire was genuinely curious.

Agent Grant’s expression instantly hardened. “You’re just a kid. You shouldn’t be

asking questions like that.”

Claire looked him up and down. “How old are you exactly?”

“Thirty-five.” He didn’t mind the scrutiny.

In their line of work, people rarely lived to see old age. You either transferred to desk duty, or you died in the field.

Agent Grant even found it slightly amusing; he still considered himself a relatively young man.

Claire smiled sweetly. “Are you married?”

Agent Grant choked on his words. “No.”

In their line of work, they could die on any given Tuesday. Who would be crazy enough to get married?

Only a lunatic!

“Then we have something in common. I’m not married either.”

“We’re practically peers, Agent Grant. Don’t be so uptight!”

She certainly had a sharp tongue.

Agent Grant rolled his eyes. “Forget about those two bodies for a second Tread your statement. You were the last person to speak with the victim before he lost

consciousness?”

He still only had a vague grasp of what had actually transpired.

He had already confirmed that the man in the ICU was one of their deep-cover informants.

Specifically, he was one of Silas’s assets.
