Chapter 1669
[ 635 words ]
“Yes, but he only managed to gasp out a few words when he saw me before he passed out.”
“I have my suspicions, but I can’t be entirely sure if Silas is the person he was trying to reach.”
Claire didn’t know Agent Grant at all. She assumed anyone from Special Security was trustworthy, but in this situation, she couldn’t afford to be wrong.
“He gave you the intel, didn’t he?” Hillary had told him earlier to ensure Claire’s safety.
Not just because she was a protected civilian, but because Honeysuckle had passed the package to her.
He hadn’t expected the young girl to be so cautious. If he didn’t ask directly, she clearly wasn’t going to volunteer the information.
“He did shove something into my hand, but his explicit instructions were to give it to Commander Silas.”
Claire was still slightly guarded.
While Agent Grant seemed like one of the good guys, what if he wasn’t?
“The intel he nearly died to retrieve is absolutely critical to us. We have zero visibility
on the enemy’s movements in that sector without it.”
“Silas is currently deployed and won’t be back anytime soon.”
“How about this? I’ll call him on a secure line right now, in front of you.”
“If he authorizes me to take custody of the package, you hand it over. Deal?”
Agent Grant offered a reasonable compromise.
“Okay,” Claire agreed, though she was still a bit skeptical. “Can you even reach him right now?”
What if he claimed he couldn’t get through and used it as an excuse to confiscate the drive by force?
“We’ll try the encrypted internal network.”
He couldn’t be reached through normal cellular networks, but Agent Grant smiled confidently.
Living up to the reputation of their encrypted network, the call actually connected. Silas sounded like he was in the middle of a warzone.
“Grant, what is it?”
Agent Grant quickly briefed him on the situation in Cabinda, then handed the phone to Claire.
“Claire, you can trust Grant with the package. But since you’ve handled it, they know you have it. You need to stay extremely vigilant!”
“I’m having Grant put a security detail on you immediately. They might not live inside your house, but they’ll be watching.”
“Don’t worry, they will do everything in their power…”
Claire cut him off. “Silas, are the guys you’re sending better than Jace and Rory?”
Silas fell silent. There were operators of that caliber-himself included.
But those were the absolute elite of the security apparatus, usually deployed on suicide missions overseas.
Special Security was currently severely understaffed.
“I don’t have anyone like that available right now, but I can pull strings to get a tier- one operator assigned to you.”
Every military branch had its legendary soldiers, and they could be borrowed for high-priority missions.
Given Claire’s unique value and the
fact that she was currently in the
crosshairs of two separate terrorist
syndicates requesting elite
protection was entirely justified.
“I just hope whoever you send prioritizes their own survival as much as mine.” Claire
didn’t want any more blood spilled because of her.
“Don’t worry, they’re professionals.” Silas gave her a standard reassurances.
In reality, any operator assigned to a VIP detail like this had already accepted that they might take a bullet for their principal.
But Claire hadn’t reached the security clearance level where that was standard protocol yet.
Someone like Dr. Sterling Senior had two bodyguards who were literal apex predators recruited from the
special forces, permanently
ve
assigned to him by the Central
Security Bureau.

“Thank you, Silas.”
Claire handed the phone back, and Agent Grant spoke with Silas for another minute.
Once he hung up, Claire finally handed over the package.
She had hidden it inside the wrapper of a sanitary pad.
Agent Grant stood there holding the sanitary pad, his weathered face flushing a deep crimson.
“You put it in here?”
Claire nodded.
“Well… no one would ever think to look here.”
Agent Grant was speechless.
was speechless. Yeah,
and if one saw him walking
around with a sanitary pad sticking out of his pocket, they’d think he was a complete pervert.
