Chapter 1729
[ 660 words ]
“Claire, you’re seriously that amazing?”
Up until now, Yolande had only heard vague rumors about her cousin’s medical prowess.
Hearing it directly from Ewan made her realize that Claire wasn’t just some bright premed student-she was a legitimate prodigy.
Yolande was well aware of the Harding family’s immense wealth and power.
And yet, the youngest son of the Harding empire was being treated by a college student.
At Claire’s age, she shouldn’t have even been allowed in the same room as the Harding family’s private physicians.
Unless her skills were truly that extraordinary.
Otherwise, why would they ever trust her with Ewan’s recovery?
“I wouldn’t say I’m amazing. I just happen to specialize in Mr. Harding’s specific condition,” Claire replied modestly.
She kept her tone effortlessly humble.
Yolande didn’t buy the humility for a second. With the Hardings’ unlimited resources,
there was no way they would settle for anything less than a medical genius.
She was more convinced than ever that her cousin was a miracle worker.
“Wait, if that’s true, does that mean Quentin’s leg might still have a chance?”
“Who’s Quentin?” Ewan’s cheerful demeanor vanished. He had been thrilled to bump into his long-time crush.
Was she actually here visiting another guy?
He had actually heard the name in passing.
Even during the darkest depths of his depression, he had always kept tabs on the girl he loved.
He knew her dance partner was named Quentin.
And because they danced together, he knew they spent countless hours locked in intense physical contact.
Every time he heard the guy’s name, Ewan felt a suffocating wave of jealousy wash over him.
He was standing right here, yet Yolande was still entirely focused on her partner.
Had the countless hours in the studio caused her to fall for the guy?
“Quentin is my dance partner at the university,” Yolande answered matter-of-factly. She didn’t bat an eye.
“What happened to him?” Hearing her casual tone eased some of the burning jealousy in Ewan’s chest.
At least it didn’t sound like she was hopelessly in love with him.
“He suffered a horrific leg fracture recently…” As the words left her mouth, Yolande shot an apologetic look at Ewan.
Her old friend had lost the use of his legs trying to save someone’s life, which was a deeply sensitive topic.
She hoped she hadn’t offended him by complaining about another broken leg.
What if talking about crippling injuries was a trigger for him?
Honestly, she fondly remembered the days when they sat next to each other in high school. They had been incredibly close back then.
When Ewan was first paralyzed, she had rushed to the hospital to see him.
But he had refused all visitors, completely shutting her out.
She had tried texting him repeatedly over the months, but he had never replied to a single message.
Eventually, between the brutal demands of her dance schedule and starting college, she had slowly let the friendship go.
Any lingering crush she might have harbored
back in high school ha et
long been completely snu
his total radio silence.
That was why she felt perfectly comfortable treating him like a casual acquaintance
now.
Hearing that her handsome dance partner had shattered his leg, Ewan felt a sudden, deeply inappropriate surge of relief.
“He completely shattered it? The surgeons couldn’t just pin it back together?”
“You’re not actually trying to get Claire to treat him, are you?”
“Isn’t that a massive waste of her time?”
Claire had not only pulled him from the brink of total despair, but she had also saved Hillary’s life.
In his eyes, she was practically a medical deity.
As far as he was concerned, dragging his miracle doctor away to look at some standard sports injury was completely absurd.
Why use a scalpel to butter toast?
Or did Yolande actually care about this guy so much that she was pulling out all the stops for him?
The crushing wave of jealousy returned, hitting him even harder this time.
“A waste of time?” Yolande frowned in confusion.
She felt like he was being needlessly hostile, but she couldn’t fathom why.
“He fell from a second-story balcony.
It’s a severe trauma case. He’s had
multiple surgeries, and his doctors are saying his career is officially over. “
