Chapter 1728
[ 684 words ]
After all, she didn’t have a shred of solid proof. She might just sound like a paranoid lunatic making wild accusations.
“You don’t have to accuse him outright. Just drop in for a visit and gently point him in that direction,” Claire suggested smoothly.
Claire figured this Quentin guy couldn’t be entirely stupid. If he was pointed at the truth, he would likely piece the rest together himself.
Yolande nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll go visit him at the hospital and just casually bring it up.”
“Which hospital is he at? I can give you a ride. I’ve got some time to kill,” Claire offered.
Her car was parked in the residential lot right across from campus, which was far quicker than trying to hail a cab.
“The Federal Medical Center,” Yolande replied, recalling the single time she had gone to see him.
Between her grueling practice schedule and the agonizing stress of her parents’ divorce, she had barely had the emotional bandwidth to visit.
“Perfect. That’s exactly where I’m headed. Come on, jump in.”
The two of them drove to the hospital together, and Claire walked Yolande straight up to the orthopedic ward to make sure she didn’t get lost.
“Claire, my cousins mentioned you’re actually an incredible doctor. Do you want to come in and take a look at Quentin’s leg?” Yolande asked hopefully.
She didn’t know the full extent of Claire’s medical expertise, but she trusted her implicitly.
“I don’t want to put you on the spot, but I heard you’re close with Dr. Lee. I just wonder if he might know of some experimental treatment to save his leg.”
“Let me take a look at his charts first,” Claire agreed.
It was notoriously impossible for a regular patient to get a consultation with Dr. Lee.
The man’s schedule was perpetually booked solid for months.
However, before they even reached Quentin’s room, they bumped into someone else.
“Yolande!” It was Ewan, here for his routine check-up.
His check-ups were regular, but his primary doctor handling his actual intensive treatments was Claire.
Catching sight of Yolande, Ewan completely tuned out Claire standing right beside her.
His eyes instantly lit up, practically turning into an oversized puppy the moment he spotted the girl of his dreams.
As a passive observer, Claire took one look at Ewan’s utterly love-struck expression and immediately understood the dynamic.
“Ewan? What are you doing here?” Yolande asked.
“Is your leg fully healed?”
She looked him over. The two of them had actually been high school classmates.
But after
horrific accident that
crippled him, Ewan had entirely net
isolated himself from the world and they had eventually lost touch.
She never expected to run into him like this.
Ewan hesitated for a split second. “Not completely, no. But…”
“It’s going to be fully healed very soon!”
He had been so blinded by Yolande’s presence that he only just realized Claire was standing there.
Seeing his doctor right there, a flush of embarrassment crept up his neck.
When Claire had miraculously saved his sister, Hillary, his future brother-in-law, Hanson Patton, had aggressively dumped a massive sum oftech shares onte Claire as a reward before his family even had a chance to properly say thank you.
Hanson had meant well, but the heavy-handed financial gesture felt incredibly transactional.
The entire Harding family had been quietly terrified that they had offended her.
Thankfully, the moment Hillary was discharged, she had tracked Claire down to personally apologize.
Seeing the guilt written all over Ewan’s face, Claire knew exactly what was running through his mind.
She didn’t actually hold a grudge over the shares, entirely understanding Hanson’s frantic logic at the time.
The guy had literally handed her millions of dollars in equity. It was hard to stay mad at that.
But it showed how inherently decent the Hardings were that they still felt terrible about it.
“Why do you keep staring at my cousin?” Yolande asked, noticing his awkward glances.
“Your cousin is the doctor fixing my legs. You can ask her! I’m going to walk again, right?”
Claire noticed Ewan was not only acting guilty around her but seemed extremely flustered just talking to Yolande.
Of course, the nervous energy directed at Yolande was vastly different from the respect he showed his doctor.
She blinked innocently and smiled.
“Mr.
is absolutely right. His
treatment is well underway, and he’s alteddy
making incredible”
