Chapter 1730
[ 656 words ]
“I heard Claire specializes in Traditional Medicine, so I wanted to see if she knew any alternative therapies,” Yolande explained patiently, despite Ewan’s abrasive tone.
The jealousy burned deeper. When he had been paralyzed, why hadn’t Yolande scoured the earth for miracle doctors for *him*?
If Yolande had any idea what was going through his head, she would have called him an absolute lunatic.
*Are you out of your mind?*
*Your family has billions of dollars. They hired the best specialists on the planet. Why would you need me playing nurse?*
Bringing some random local doctor to the Harding estate would have been a humiliating joke.
“Isn’t Dr. Claire a little too busy for this?”
Ewan blurted out the words before he could stop himself.
As soon as Yolande shot him a sharp look, he immediately regretted opening his mouth.
It wasn’t his place to dictate Claire’s schedule.
His aggressive questioning just made him sound like an overbearing jerk.
If anyone knew how hopelessly in love with her he was, they’d realize he was just acting like a petty, insecure child.
He opened his mouth to apologize, but realizing anything he said would only dig the hole deeper, he snapped it shut.
Having watched the entire trainwreck unfold in real-time, Claire was one hundred percent certain that Ewan was desperately in love with Yolande.
Still, this wasn’t the time to play matchmaker.
“Let’s go check on Quentin. I do actually have somewhere to be later,” Claire interjected smoothly.
Ewan let out a heavy sigh of relief at her timely intervention.
Thank god she hadn’t called him out on his obnoxious behavior.
“I’ll come with you guys,” Ewan declared suddenly.
“Why would you do that?” Yolande asked, genuinely bewildered.
Ewan offered a strained smile. “I’m just bored. And since we both have shattered legs, maybe we can bond over our physical therapy trauma.”
“I’ve been in this chair for three years. I know exactly how dark it gets when you’re told you’ll never walk again.”
“Maybe I can offer him some actual perspective.”
“I guess that makes sense,” Yolande agreed slowly.
Claire nearly rolled her eyes. *Yeah, right. He just wants to size up the competition.*
Only someone as oblivious as Yolande would actually fall for that terrible excuse. Quentin was lying in his hospital bed, staring blankly at a book in absolute boredom. When Yolande walked through the door, his eyes widened in surprise. “Yolande? What are you doing here?”
He and Yolande had been dance partners for years, building a deeply ingrained, almost instinctual bond.
Still, he was thoroughly confused as to why she had brought an entourage with her.
He vaguely recognized the pretty girl, but the intense-looking guy in the wheelchair completely threw him off.
Had she seriously brought him a crippled friend so they could start a support group?
“Just wanted to check on you. Figured you were going crazy staring at the walls,” Yolande said.
“But you have studio practice today
Did you skip?” Quentin was
incredibly disciplined and had their
entire schedule memorized.
“I skipped. I really couldn’t stomach the idea of dancing with Yorick today.”
It was incredibly rare for Yolande to let her frustration show so openly.
Quentin immediately picked up on the tension. “What happened? Did Yorick do something?”
“Yorick is…” Yolande trailed off, acutely aware of the extra people in the room. She settled for, “He’s completely delusional.”
Then she quickly pulled Claire forward. Anyway, let me introduce you. This is my cousin ciare. She’s a prodigy in the medical department. She’s been studying medicine since she was a kid!”
“And this is Ewan. We went to high school together, and he’s currently one of Claire’s patients.”
“He was injured in a terrible accident
a few years ago while saving
someone’s life. Claire is the one
helping him walk again
Hearing that, Quentin looked at Ewan with a newfound sense of respect.
Ewan forced a tight, polite smile. “Nice to meet you, Quentin.”
“Nice to meet you too,” Quentin replied with a warm, unassuming smile.
*Wow, this guy is really handsome. And he looks completely harmless,* Ewan thought bitterly.
Claire stood to the side, quietly enjoying the absolute chaos radiating off Ewan.
