Chapter 1756
[ 598 words ]
Claire shared the exact same sentiment.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going now.”
Mary hadn’t said a word this entire time.
But she was furious about how Evie had spoken to her granddaughter, so when Claire firmly stated she wouldn’t treat the student, Mary completely approved.
Getting involved with the families of patients like this was nothing but a nightmare.
Back when she worked in the hospital, picking and choosing patients wasn’t exactly an option.
But Claire was different. She hadn’t even graduated; nobody could force her into anything.
Besides, with this other girl’s toxic attitude, if Claire agreed to the treatment, this psycho would probably turn around and report her for practicing without a Medical License.
In reality, Claire had already obtained her license while Hale was still alive, so she had absolutely zero fear of being reported.
“Alright. I’m sorry for holding you up.” Yvette felt even more embarrassed when she noticed the elegant elderly woman standing by Claire’s side.
After Evie had caused such a scene, and hearing Claire admit she wouldn’t be treating the leg, Yvette inexplicably felt a pang of deep disappointment.
Still, she hadn’t given up on her plan to find the attending physician.
Seeing Claire walk away, Evie didn’t feel the victorious rush she had anticipated. Instead, she looked at Yvette with mounting anxiety.
“I was just worried you were being scammed…” Evie trailed off, unable to defend her actions further.
Yvette cut her off. “I know your heart is in the right place, Evie.”
“But now that I’m in Cabinda, I’ll take over at the hospital. You should head back to Montara.”
“Or, if you’d like to stay and sightsee for a few days, I meant what I said I’ll cover your travel expenses.”
Yvette’s message couldn’t have been clearer.
Evie’s mood plummeted. She felt convinced that Yvette was only acting this way because Quentin had poisoned her against her.
She had been so confident she could win over the mother and lock down the son.
Now, the situation was spiraling far worse than she had ever imagined.
“I don’t need your money. My mom transferred my allowance before I left.”
“Coming to take care of him was the right thing to do.”
“It’s just that he’s so hostile toward
me right now, and there’s nothing t
can do Evie seamlessly slipped into the role of the tragic victim.
Yvette frowned. “I know he’s been unfair to you.”
“But you two grew up together. You’re worried about him, and he’s worried about dragging you down.”
“Evie, his leg really might never

“You shouldn’t waste your time on him. I want you to find someone who will love you
with his whole heart.”
“With the shape he’s in right now, I refuse to let him hold you back.”
Evie’s heart dropped. So Yvette really was siding with her flesh and blood.
Had Quentin actually convinced his mother to accept that seductive cousin of Claire’s?
If so, where did that leave her?
Evie’s face twisted into an ugly expression. She was completely losing her grip. She had always been bratty and entitled, severely lacking in actual cunning.
Most of her tricks had been spoon-fed to her by her mother.
Being blatantly rejected by Yvette triggered a wave of raw fury.
Were this mother and son just playing her for a fool?
They had an understanding…
Unfortunately, Yvette didn’t have

entertain her tantrum,
because right at that momentel
phone rang
“Hello?” Yvette answered.
“Auntie, are you sure? Are you saying my husband’s side of the family has living relatives?”
Whatever was said on the other end made Yvette’s expression turn intensely serious.
Standing nearby, Evie listened to the half-conversation and scowled.
What was this? Were some poor, distant relatives of Quentin’s late father crawling out of the woodwork?
