Chapter 1757

[ 643 words ]

Even though she couldn’t hear the other side of the conversation, Evie was already fuming.

She had long considered the Young family’s wealth as her personal piggy bank.

If some random relatives suddenly crashed the party, where would that leave her?

The Grant family wasn’t particularly wealthy; her parents were just excellent at social climbing.

That was exactly why Evie had targeted the Young family from the very beginning. The family consisted solely of a widowed mother and her only son.

As long as she kept Yvette happy and Quentin under her control, transforming the Young fortune into the Grant fortune was entirely within reach.

Quentin’s father had married into the family, so it would only make sense for Quentin to do the same with her, right?

To give her credit, while Evie lacked intelligence, she certainly didn’t lack ambition. Neither Yvette nor Quentin could have ever imagined the depth of her scheming.

“They’re already on a flight to Cabinda? That fast?”

Yvette frowned deeply.

She had only just received the news and hadn’t even processed it, let alone verified

if these people were actually her late husband’s relatives. Yet they were already rushing to the city.

It showed just how desperate they were.

If they had been searching for her husband all these years, did this mean they were going to try and take Quentin away?

She heard it was Quentin’s biological grandmother coming. What if she demanded that Quentin change his last name?

A dizzying array of anxieties flooded Yvette’s mind.

She completely lost any remaining patience to deal with Evie’s drama.

“Evie, you’re a good girl. But right now, on top of caring for Quentin, I have some serious family matters to attend to.”

“You really should head back to Montara.”

Without waiting for an argument, Yvette transferred five thousand dollars to Evie’s account.

Combined with the ten thousand she had sent when Evie first arrived, it was a total of fifteen thousand dollars.

For an ordinary person, it was an incredibly generous sum.

But to Evie, it was insulting.

She had slaved away looking after Quentin all this time. Even if she wasn’t a perfect nurse, didn’t her effort count for something?

Did they really think they could just pay her off like some hired help? Absolutely not.

Outwardly of course, Evie didn’t

voice any of this. Instead, she looked

at Yvette with wide,

“Yvette, Ioned eyes

your call you

said his father’s relatives are coming.”

“Let me stay and wait for them with you.”

“It’s been so long, who knows what their real intentions are? What if…”

“I’ve always treated you like my own family. Just because Quentin doesn’t like me, does that mean you don’t like me anymore either?”

Evie latched onto Yvette’s arm, her pathetic plea successfully softening the older woman’s heart.

She was indeed irritated with Evie, but she had watched the girl grow up. She felt as close to her as she would a niece.

Because of that, it was hard for Yvette to be truly ruthless.

“Of course I still care about you. Even if you don’t become my daughter-in-law,

you’re still like a daughter to me.”

Yvette meant every word.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so generous with her money.

But where Yvette couldn’t see, Evie’s face twisted in disgust.

Who gave a damn about being a fake daughter? Was she going to get inheritance rights out of it?

“Then let me stay with you. I promise I won’t get in your way.”

“Besides, I know the area around the hospital really well now. I can at least run errands for you.”

Yvette suddenly remembered her

son’s complaints and suppressed a

shiver, No need for errands. If you

wantto stay few more days just enjoy the city and relax.”

“Otherwise, your mother will accuse me of bullying her precious girl.”

And just like that, Evie managed to stay.

She immediately offered to book a hotel for Yvette.

“I know you could technically sleep.

in the VIP ward, but it’s not ve

nice

ble Let me book a room, and we can stay together.”

Evie really was playing the part of the perfect, considerate surrogate daughter.
